Is Michael Moore an NRA member?

In Bowling For Columbine, Michael Moore claims to Mr. Heston that he’s a lifetime member of the NRA. I’ll keep this GQ-style and just ask, Is he lying?

None of the on-line sources I’ve seen so far say that Moore isn’t a member of the NRA as is claimed. Not sure whether he’s a “lifetime” member, though. He seems to have rejoined after the Columbine tragedy.

The idea for the entire film project began as a bid to challenge the office of NRA President Charlton Heston.

“I had this grand plan – if they had four million members, I’d get five million Americans to join, vote for me, and then I’d dismantle the organization,” Moore said. “But then that just seemed like too much work, and I’m a slacker at heart, so I made a movie instead.”

The story in “Bowling for Columbine” was he won some NRA-sponsored shooting competition and thus got a lifetime membership.

I think it even had a picture of his membership card, IIRC.

I admit I only have the movie to go by, but what do you base this on? Assuming the stuff in the movie is genuine, he was quite a marksman as a kid… I think they showed his card and/or the certificate, and I don’t know of any reason to doubt any of that.

Case in point: some will probably be surprised that the liberal Moore himself has been a member of the NRA since childhood. Viewers may find this affiliation adds perspective to “Columbine.” In fact, Moore joined the NRA again after the Columbine shootings.

I am sure that the NRA would have mentioned it if Michael Moore was making a false claim about his membership in their organization.

One wonders if the NRA will forget to send a renewal notice…
