Is )Natural) Licorice a Hallucinogen?

I love licorice candy, and up till now I had always bought american-made licorice. Apparently, american candy mfgs. do not use natural licorice flavoring (I think because licorice contains a substance suspected of causing cancer in rats). Anyway, i happened to buy some english-made licorice candy, and ate 3 pieces before going to bed last night. All I can say is WOW-I had technecolor dreams , that seemed to go on all night! So, does natural licorice have any psychoactive properties?
I’m off to buy some more of this stuff!

Did it taste particularly different to you? - if it did, it might just have stimulated you that way.

I don’t know about cancer, but the naturally occuring compound glycyrrhizin in licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) is known to raise blood pressure and heart rate, so it could be dangerous for anyone with circulatory problems. That may have been enough stimulation to persuade you that you were experiencing a druggy “trip.”
