The later post refers to the “…for the Straight Guy” version.
The Gal Pals are “on hiatus” and I suspect Scout Productions may be attempting a massive rework to see if it can be saved. Some ideas just don’t translate so well.
As for the original QE4SG, one thing that has hurt it between last year and this one was the “when the hell’s the *&^%$ SEASON anyway??” syndrome – it kinda comes, and goes, and comes back, and goes again. They should have kept it a consistent summer-season show – and by doing that, been able to cull down the production to fewer, but better, episodes.
As it stands, its recent shows have been, well, weak. And in apparent response to realizing this they’ve recurred to the dreaded curse of series TV, the “Very Special Episode” (soldier about to ship out for Iraq; a son sees his dad for the first time in 19 years; weddings). VSE’s in any entertainment idiom make me want to Elvis my TV.
I think there are many who miss the slovenly, quirky, totally clueless but deep-down-good-souled dorky guys they made their name with. Now we run into too many that either we don’t care if they never get laid again, or seem too conveniently hand-picked.
Also, creative burnout is setting in in the attempt at something that hasn’t been done before, and sometimes the answers don’t quite fit the subject of the week. For instance I find it awkward that Kyan has apparently been assigned to expose the audience to an endless variety of stupid spa treatments, hypertermic yoga sessions, hot stone massages, etc., in that this sometimes falls flat on its face when the guy obviously just needs a decent haircut, skin care tips, and to start exercising again.
And going for group makeovers – a frat house in Dallas, the Red Sox – is a serious mistake IMO, even if they do focus on one “poster boy”. They should stick with what got them there.
