Is repeatedly doing things that make limbs fall asleep harmful?

In other words, are there cumulative effects of putting pressure on those nerves?

I took the step of going in for an orientation to Zen Buddhism yesterday, and we had some problems with the mechanics of sitting. My back is seriously weak because I have terrible posture, so I had a hard time sitting cross legged without pain. (Something I’d like to work on in general.) I had a hard time kneeling using a seiza bench, partly because my legs fell asleep. Specifically, there was a lot of pressure on my ankles.

So is it dangerous to continue to do something that makes your feet fall asleep?

when you try to stand and fall on the floor that could be dangerous.

if you are having physical difficulties then you should ask, there are alternatives to posture that could be done, also things like additional cushions and even chairs could be used.

Yeah, we’re working on it - I think the best thing to do is to get my back to where it doesn’t hurt, since it’s a problem for me anyway and I really ought to work on that. But I like the seiza position.

There are no problems I know of associated with that. If it is a chronic condition, it can be a symptom of an underlying problem, though.

A similar but unrelated problem causes by sitting in one position for long periods of time can kill you.

My arms have fallen asleep while I sleep at least every other day since I was 14 or so. It’s always because I wind up laying on top of it. I’ve had it checked by a doctor, and he said it was normal, as long as there’s a clear reason it is happening, and it goes away within 15 minutes after removing that reason.

Same with me, I often wake up with dead hunks of flesh attached to my shoulders. If long-term cumulative damage is possible, I’m screwed. :frowning:
