I have no idea why he became the new action hero. I can see him as like Judd Apatow’s sidekick or something, but not the new Harrison Ford. He just looks too nerdy boy next door for me, and I’m the target demographic!
IOW, in Transformers Megan Fox should have laughed in his face and then he should have worked out some engineering feat to stop the Autobots, and then promptly get squished when he tried to enter the fray physically.
He starred in one of HBO’s Project Greenlight movies when he was still a relative unknown. I remember the producers of the movie congratulating themselves on their good luck in getting him, and raving about how talented he was.
I remember his flower-child mother being with him everywhere.
Ditto. I also think he was the one thing that made (the already terrible) Disturbia worse than it would have been with, say, a houseplant as the lead role.
I see him as a child, forever; I watched Disney’s Even Stevens with my children, and forever he’s the kid, Louis. Or else starring in the movie version of Holes, which is a juvenile film.
He’s an adult now, then?* …looking at IMDB …* he appears to be around 23.
I don’t think his appeal is supposed to be that he’s a dreamboat, but that he’s likeable and relatable with a facility for light humor and broad accessibility. To compare him to someone from my generation, he reminds of a young John Cusack – not a pretty boy, just someone the kids can identify with and root for.
Clearly all of you folks posting don’t have kids. If you did you would be exposed to the universe named Disney Channel. There are dozens of long running sit-com series’ on the Disney Channel with kid actors. Admittedly, it’s under the radar of most folks, but it’s the primary source of entertainment in many houses with kids. Shia LaBouf was one of the stars of Even Stevens, so he was known in the industry as an up-and-comer. If you watch some of the shows it’s clear there are some talented kid actors out there. He was one of the standouts in that universe.
Now, as he’s moved into adult roles he’s focused on drama and action, in which, in my opinion, he’s reaching a bit (I thought he was decent at comedy). But, from the studio-head perspective he brings a built in audience of all those kids who watch him on Disney Channel.
On edit: didn’t see Ellen’s post when I was writing this.
I don’t think he is HOT HOT. He’s got the out-of-place dorkness thing going for him and very good comic timing. I’ve liked the things I’ve seen him in.
I think you are right. He is fills the role for a certain type. And the John Cusack comparison is on the money.
FWIW, my daughter thinks he’s hotter than lava and will see any movie he’s in regardless of content or quality. She is also a big fan of John Cusack, who I also like. I have no opinion as to Mr. LaBoeuf’s attractiveness–I’ve seen him in a couple of movies (I think), but he has left no lasting impression on me. He’s generic.
a) I love his name, and b) I find him kind of interesting as an actor. So-so looks. He’s supposed to be poised for a fine career, and whenever that kind of thing is predicted, I’m also interested in if the future star actually makes an effort to become a good actor. Or just end up puking into the gutter like so many others.
He was talented enough to play Louis Stevens (but not hot enough to deserve Tawny Dean as his girfriend), and he did Stanley Yelnats pretty well in Holes.
I thought his performance in Transformers was pretty much second helpings of Louis Stevens.
He’s an untalented hack with utterly unremarkable looks and nothing whatsoever impressive about his acting. He doesn’t belong in the same sentence as names like John David Carson or Michael Horse.
