Is Soda an Appropriate drink with breakfast?

I start every day with a Diet Coke. Have for years - and TAB before that. I don’t like coffee, and I’ll occasionally brew a cup of tea, but for the most part, it’s Diet Coke. It’s always disappointing when we go out for breakfast and the restaurant features Pepsi products. Then it’s tea or water.

I also grew up at a time when a soda was a very occasional treat, maybe twice a week? And, this was also a time where breakfast was a bowl of frosted flakes with two spoons of additional sugar sprinkled on top! So, what-evs on the sugar intake aspect? But, I still internalized the sense that soda should not be a go-to for regular consumption, and I instinctively judge others for their soda choices. But, ultimately my reasoning takes over and I end up with - live and let live!

Otherwise, the whole discussion gets into what we consider as “appropriate” for breakfast meals, vs lunch and dinner. My young adult children and their friends talk about “breakfast-for-dinner” regarding pancakes or omelets. So, there is that cultural norming going on too.

You know Borjomi, Perrier, San Pellegrino, etc. do not have any sugar in them.

I remember this conversation from my childhood:
Bro: Do you want a Coke?
Me: Yep.
Bro: What kind of Coke?
Me: Orange Crush.

I don’t remember the term for that—a brand name of something very popular becomes like a common noun. Instead of copying something, you Xerox it, or you hand someone a Kleenex instead of a facial tissue (to name other examples). So I’ve had my brain expecting a Diet Coke and the waitstaff have actually brought me a Diet Pepsi. Blechh!

I’m good with Coke Zero too. Kroger has a very respectable knockoff of it. But I’ve never found a decent substitute for Diet Coke.

This doesn’t seem to have been generally true (although people sometimes distrusted water from specific sources). Mostly, they drank beer and wine for the same reasons people do today; i.e. they liked the taste and the effects; and, crucially, they were far more likely to leave written records about drinking wine or beer, since you don’t have to pay for water, write down recipes for it, etc.

On rare occasion when I’m very thirsty early in the morning I’ll have some cold diet soda along with breakfast and coffee.

It’s not a regular thing in part because the carbonation can make for embarrassing belching at work. You don’t want to be presenting a case at the hospital’s weekly tumor conference when excess gas demands an outlet.

“So, the histologic features we see here are diagnostic of (BRAWP).”

Brief Reactive Atypical Weber’s Psychosis?

I’m lucky because I hate carbonation and also can’t stand sweet beverages, so no type of soda has ever appealed to me at breakfast or any other time, saving me from the desire to consume tons of empty calories or artificial sweetener over the years. But I’ll try to withhold judgment of other people’s choices.

My partner brews his own kombucha and often has muesli moistened with kombucha for breakfast.

I rarely drink soda. It’s liquid candy. But if that’s what you like for breakfast, go for it. Anything is appropriate at any meal if that’s what you like.

I don’t drink coffee, so Diet Coke it is.

This being SDMB, I knew someone would know it. Thanks! IIRC business folks see that as a major coup.

As a point of comparison, what about Dr. Pepper?

“Dr Pepper Time”, according to one promotion, was at 10, 2 and 4 o’clock.

10 is a pretty late breakfast, but it’s morning. Of course, some people warmed it up before drinking it…not sure if time of day impacted that decision.

I think part of it is at a restaurant the only refillable drink is water coffee or soda especially when a single glass of milk /juice is 2 bucks or more even at fast food places

since my idea of breakfast is chili cheese fries (why yes I learned to eat like a trucker thanks mom lol )or cold pizza or just leftovers from dinner its usually soda … and mountain dew or whatever is cherry

I wouldn’t have used the word “appropriate”, but i don’t drink soda for breakfast. Nor orange juice. I don’t eat donuts, either. I find that i feel groggy if i eat too much sugar for breakfast. I prefer starch and fat.

My wife loves cold cuts from breakfast. When she came with me to a conference in Linz, Austria where this was standard, she was in hog heaven. No soda, though.

Bill Lister had a song that describes the breakfast of champions.

It’s not the time of day that dictates the drink, but the food you are consuming with it. A lot of breakfast foods are sweet and/or cakey and don’t pair well with soft drinks. But if you’re having steak and eggs, have at it.

Twelve ounces is a lot of coffee. I personally draw the line at about 8oz. but I’m sure there are people who drink more in one sitting.

That’s funny, I feel the reverse. I would never drink a soda with a steak. But it’s okay with sweets or chip.

Of course, I rarely drink soda.

I voted no but I am thinking of a sugary soda like coke or sprite or similar. If you want to include sparkling water (or something like orange juice with a splash of sparkling water) then that’s a different story (still not for me but less of a visceral no)
