I’m a huge fan of Steven Wright, but haven’t seen any new stuff in years,
This is from 2014 and Stevie seems way different than his usual sardonic self.
I may be wrong, but he seems half in the bag.
I haven’t seen any recent standup and I’ve never seen him on a talk show…he looked okay to be (just older). ISTM that we’re not used to him not being, well, him. He chit chatting but trying to wedge his normal schtick in there whenever he could. Some of those lines were being fed to him, I’m sure, so he could get his jokes in, but the rest was just normal conversation which we don’t normally see from him…but he was still trying to be the Steven Wright that we all know and love, whether it’s real and that’s how he thinks or it’s an act and he was thinking quickly, I don’t know.
You have to keep in mind, when you watch an hour SW special, it probably took him a year to write it, every single line of that special is written, no joke was made up on the spot, every single line was written, tested, reworked and here not only is he thinking on his feet, but he’s bantering with another person.
I haven’t seen him in years, and I wouldn’t have recognized him. He looks so old. He didn’t appear drunk to me though.
He looks remarkably like George R.R. Martin. He always talked slow and very wait. . what?-ish. Didn’t look drunk to me.
Nope, didn’t look drunk to me at all. He didn’t look in good health though. Like he was wheezing or something.
