Yes, It keeps the unpleasantness in one well defined area, so that other areas can be nice and tidy. Kind of like how you have a toilet so you don’t have to piss in your kitchen sink.

The Pit is in place because this board is primarily populated by intelligent people having reasonably intelligent conversations. Sometimes, very occasionally, those conversations turn nasty because one or more of those posters either has a lapse of judgement or manners, or is simply being a twit. Since we are dedicated to fighting ignorance rather than let it stand, it makes sense to have a forum where we can revile that type of nonsense with the venom and disdain it deserves. Doing so IN the thread tends to derail it terribly, and doing nothing could be viewed as tacit acceptance that all opinions are equally valid regardless of their content.

NojNoj, this thread doesn’t belong in Great Debates. It could go in either ATMB (as a discussion of why we have the Pit) or The Pit itself (as a complaint about people who feel the need to use insults). I think you were shooting for the latter, so I’m sending this to the Pit.

Your wide-eyed “golly gee, people on the Internet are insulting each other??? What ever for???” act might have had a better chance of working 15 years ago. Now it’s just embarrassing. Especially since you’re laying it on a little thick, don’t you think?
If you’re going to try to pull of the “I’m ever so confused by this mod instruction, I saw them call someone a poopyhead in some forum called the BBQ Pit!” act, I recommend at least putting some effort into it. Use broken English, pretend to be from Belgium, maybe wear a fake mustache while you post.

If you’re new here, just read for a while, and learn. I did that for probably three years before I waded in and posted. Mostly because I realized that once I started, it would suck up a good chunk of my free time, but also because most of the people here are highly intelligent, and I figured I’d learn from them. And I was right on both counts.
*But everyone I’ve had to point this out to has ended up banned before they took the advice.
