I’ve never asked this question in my 15 years here. But the last couple of days have been horrible.
Things hang forever, sometimes ‘waiting for cdnvigilink.com ’ as well as what I think is an ad site (ping.chartbeat.net ), but mostly waiting for the ‘boards.straightdope.com ’.
ETA: Seems only to happen in Chrome. I just edited with Safari without delay.
It hasn’t been any slower than normal for me. I run an adblocker and a script blocker so if there’s a problem with viglink I won’t see it.
Chartbeat doesn’t appear to be advertising. See this page for their explanation:
A couple of relevant quotes from that page:
A bug in some browsers means that whenever they are waiting on a part of the site to load they don’t reference the slow-loading item but instead reference the code at the bottom of the page. So, when the browser tells you it’s “waiting for ping.chartbeat.net ”, what it actually means is it’s “waiting for this image or advertisement to load so that I can get down to ping.chartbeat.net and finish the job”.
Strange.
No problem with Safari but, if I use Chrome I am now being forced to wait (and wait and wait . . .) for pixel.quantserve.com as well as the Board itself.
My Chrome version is up-to-date and I run an ad-blocker (but no script blocker, mind you).
Thanks for your rapid response!

I run IE with no add ons. It’s been flying since whatever they did to the Board a few months ago.

I have IE11 and have been getting many and frequent
where all it takes to display it is to click the refresh do-hickey.
This has been happening for several days, but was rare before that.
Other wonky little things, too. All on SDMB and nowhere else.
This has been a problem with me in the past, but it’s been working fine for a while now. Firefox.
Well, now that I said that, I’ve been hitting pockets of extreme slowness today.
Every time the board just won’t load, I go and get actual stuff done. It’s a feature, not a bug.
I am definitely hitting pockets of slowness now. It’s like those action movies where the fighting is in real time but then suddenly slows down for a significant kick or punch, then speeds back up again.
