Delays caused by ads?

As a member (and a Charter Member at that), I am not supposed to see ads. And truthfully, I don’t.

But sometimes, there is an unreasonable delay in loading a page. Usually, when this happens, there is a message in my browser. The message takes the form of one of the following (or similar):

Connecting to google-analytics.com
Connecting to pixel.quantserve.com
Connecting to api.viglink.com

I’m unsure why, when I have paid to be ad-free, I suffer delays caused by what seem to me to be ads trying to load. Can any of the PTB shed any light on why a paid subscriber might be inconvenienced by ads they paid to avoid, trying to load?

There have been a few threads about this.

Strange link behaviour from SDMB

Possible illicit adware injected into SDMB posts??

Basically, it’s a way to increase revenue to the Dope put in last year by Ed Zotti.

We’re trying a money-making experiment

Basically the code tells a receiving site that you were directed there from the Dope. If the site is run by a Vigilink (formerly Driving Revenue) client, and you buy something from them, the Dope gets a commission from the sale. Amazon, eBay, and Buy.com are just some of the revenue clients who pay money to the Dope if you buy something when you click on their site through links in the SD.

As for Quantcast and Google Anylatics, they’re tracking services that report on traffic volume on the Dope. They don’t track individual users specifically, though.

Thanks, cochrane. I guess I need to be more alert to these kind of threads. I’m still not keen on the delays, but knowing about them makes them easier to deal with.

Thanks again!
