Is the Coneheads movie any good?

I’ve been watching a lot of old SNL episodes recently. I never got to see the Coneheads movie that came out in 1993. The Netflix reviews are pretty mixed. Worth a rent if I liked the original skits? Or, is it like a lot of those movies when the 5 minute skit doesn’t work in a full length movie?

The first five minutes of the movie alone are worth the rental.

One of the better SNL adaptations. Damning with faint praise I know but it’s not without its charm.

It’s a fun movie. I agree with Odesio, out of all the SNL-based movies, it’s in the top 3.

I am not an SNL fan, nor do I like the Coneheads. But I love this silly movie.
For some reason, it just works.

If you asked me 15 years ago I would’ve told you it was great; I haven’t seen it since then. Of course, 15 years ago I was in the 8th grade.

Seven zerls?!

I like it.

I’m not a SNL groupie, and was only mildly amused by the original Coneheads skits, but this movie is just fun. I’ll watch it once a year if I catch it on TV. It’s not really like an extra-long SNL skit, nor does it feel like a collection of skits loosely tied together.

I hesitate saying this as a crotchety old man, but: “it’s cute”.

Great soundtrack

Interesting to read these responses. I was a big fan of SNL during those days, and the Coneheads were one of my favorite recurring sketches. But, when they made a movie so many years later, I was very skeptical (and, IIRC, it wasn’t reviewed well), and so, I never saw it. May have to hunt it down now.

Yeah, I would put it at #5 of the SNL spinoff movies for me. (The others being Blues Brothers, Wayne’s World, Superstar, and the Ladies Man, so make of that what you will.)

I thought it was funny when I watched it 15+ years ago.

No matter what you think of it, it *does * have Sinbad’s immortal advice on selecting a career.

Dan Ackroyd does a credible acting job. It made me wonder how he’d be in a serious film.

Everybody had fun making this movie and it really shows.

I think everything is great fun in this movie.

For someone reason my favotite gag is the Eggplants in the grocery store scene with Jane Curtin.

Holy shit, they made a movie of the Ladies Man? And, holy shit, at least one person thought it was good? Hmm, I may have to get myself a bottle of Courvoisier and check it out.

I have never seen the SNL character–I didn’t even know the movie was an SNL spinoff–and I still found it fairly enjoyable.

After posting earlier in this thread, I’ve been thinking of ways to incorporate Beldar’s line, “May I have 55 words with you?”

In a related note I love when she is in the store with a shopping cart full of lightbulbs. Lightbulbs???
