I just looked at the price of a cheeseburger, drink and fries (smallest size unless otherwise indicated) and these are the prices I see within two miles radius of my house (all prices include tax)
McDonald’s QPC meal with once daily $7 offer in app $7.49
Wendy’s Dave’s Single with cheese combo with $2 off once daily offer in app $9.06
Shake Shack $15.57
Five Guys $16,02
Local place $25.65
Local place #2 $26.50
I can see why there’s a line at McDonald’s and Wendy’s.
Since they changed the patties a few years ago (fresh, not frozen, cooked to order), they taste like a very reasonable fast food burger. However, as I said above, not what I want when I go to McDonald’s. But it is a decent burger by any objective metric, so far as there can be objective metrics in matters of taste.
At Wendy’s, I just go for the chicken sandwiches. Far better than the burgers, in my opinion. I want to like Wendy’s burgers, but I just don’t.
Yeah, as a kid the Dave’s Classic (or was it Dave’s Big Classic—that sounds more corrrect rhythmically) was my favorite burger, but over the years I’ve given them burgers a shot and I regret not just getting the spicy chicken sandwich.
They have a new mushroom, muenster, garlic burger you might be interested in.
Oh, and the commercials are rather stupid but the garlic parmesan saucy nuggets are quite good. I’ve been getting a few of those instead of fries when we have Wendy’s.
I had a McRib just now. It was perfectly fine. A solid C+ of a sandwich. The bun was a little soggy from the excessive amount of sauce they dredge the patty in, but not so much that it ruined the texture of the bread. I added mustard and extra pickles.
Mustard + BBQ sauce makes a great topping for most burger-like sandwiches. When I worked at Jack in the Box, one of my custom creations that I often ate on my lunch break was a quarter-pound patty on a sesame bun, with BBQ, mustard, tomato, pickle, and either grilled onions or a couple of onion rings.
I expect Five Guys is on par with Harvey’s, from your description; I’ve eaten at several. Yes, not a fast / convenient as McDs. but pretty decent burgers. Their gimmick is huge bins of in-the-shell peanuts, to which you can help yourself. We don’t go there as a family because my son is allergic to peanuts; also there isn’t one near our house.
BGR is another chain, their gimmick is milkshakes. We DO go there from time to time. Also Elevation Burger (we used to frequent their original location).
All are pretty similar in their basic hamburger offerings, and all are a step or two above McDonalds.
I do still maintain that McDs fills an ecological niche. Then again, so do slime molds and buzzards.
Your son and others like him are theoretically the reason those peanuts are there in the first place. Apparently confirmed by Five Guys’ UK presence:
We by no means want to exclude guests from our stores, but at the same time would not want to disappoint our peanut eating guests.
We appreciate that nuts are one of of the 14 common allergens and take the necessary precautions to avoid putting someone’s health at risk. We have signage on our doors, tills and menus regarding the presence of peanuts in bulk containers. The boxes of refined peanut oil in the dining area are intended to further alert customers of its use.
Not sure you are talking about the apple and cherry pies they used to deep fry and were like molten lava in your mouth if you didn’t wait long enough. I loved those pies! It was so worth the 50% chance you were melting off a layer of skin in your mouth.
Now those are two words I would never have put together. Color (or flavor) me gobsmacked. But not smacking my gob in eager anticipation. Yeccchchchchch@@!!!1!!11!!!
