Is there a feature that prevents double posts?

Besides the normal 60-second time-out, that is? I was actually deliberately trying to make a double post over in MPSIMS, 'cause it was fairly vital to my stupid joke, and can’t seem to do it. Is there some sort of identical-post filter? Or just a dumb joke filter, perhaps? (I strongly suspect that the latter is not the case, given what I have gotten away with posting in the past.)

Like an idiot I forgot to check the “email notification” box. This post corrects that.

The “flood control” is usually sufficient, so the answer would have to be “yes.”

Someone else complained of this and then said the answer was a delayed-reaction of some sort. You might check back to see if it in fact really did appear later, as was the case for the other fellow. (Sorry, I forgot his context, so I have no way to search for it.)

I just ran into it. http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=38145

Here’s sombody who made a triple bogey because it didn’t seem to go through right away.

And I just did it myself.
I had gotten the screen that says, “The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties”.

So I automatically hit F5 (refresh). This time it paused for a while and when it came back there was a double post.

So I guess the error undid the 60-second safety net.
Not a big problem, but it is nice to know you aren’t the only one to run into it.

I’ve seen a lot of double posts in the last few days.
I guess it is linked to the slowness problems.

In another ATMB Thread, Geniuses, Geniuses All, we tossed around this very question.

I was interested because I have rarely run into anything that I couldn’t break, so this “double-post filter” seemed impossible.

To save you the trouble of checking… YES, I did it. I broke it. The streak is still alive.

Then UncaBeer showed up and got testy, so we had to stop. I know, I know, it’s all fun and games until somebody commits bandwith theft…

Interesting. If “flood control” refers to the feature which prevents a member from posting more than once in 60 seconds, then what I ran into was not that. I waited 60 seconds on purpose, then back-buttoned over to the reply screen and tried to resubmit my text. No dice. So I refreshed the thread, copied the text, and pasted it into the reply box to see if that would work. Nope. Each time, the board thanked me for posting, and then didn’t actually put the post up. I then submitted a different post to the same thread, which worked just fine. This lead me to suspect that in addition to the 60-second rule, there might be some sort of filter that keeps one from submitting the exact same text as a previous post.

It seems like, in the thread you linked, they were speculating on defeating the 60-second rule, rather than this strange thing I’m talking about.

You’re right, but I did manage to double-post.

There seems to be a new feature, not just flood control, that tests whether you have posted identically to the same thread and blocks it.
I’m going to test it right now.
One minute after I post this, I will post again, and we’ll see if it gets filtered out.

And it wasn’t the flood control feature either.

I hit flood control, then posted again a minute later, got through, but no duplicate appeared.

This should help a lot in times of doubt.
When the system is unresponsive, you can just hit Submit again without fear of double posting.

It’s still not a good idea to hit “submit” twice… Even if the server does filter out duplicates, and make your mistake invisible, that’s one more thing that the server needs to do, and we’re already redlining it. I’ve only heard of about three cases where somebody trusted the CGI only to have the message lost and gone forever, as compared to n+1 cases of someone not trusting it and multiposting. Trust it, or if in doubt and it’s a post you really don’t want to lose, C&P it to Notepad, save it, and check again in 24 hours.
