Is there a glitch in the board? Or a spam attack?

Twice today, I’ve clicked the link to pull up “Unread” posts. That should be giving me a list of threads with recent posts.

Instead I’ve gotten a list of old threads I started. In some cases, these were six year old threads with no apparent recent activity.

One possibility is that somebody posted a recent message - presumably spam - on a bunch of my old threads and the mods deleted the new message but the activity brought the old thread back to the top of the queue.

Or maybe it’s a software glitch.

I tried it a few times and I can’t get it to misbehave.

What browser/OS/theme are you using?

If you can get it to misbehave again, pay attention to the URL that it sends you to. It should be
https://boards.straightdope.com/unread
If it’s not, let us know what URL it actually sent you to.

If you have questions about specific threads, let me know what threads and I can look to see if they have recently deleted posts in them.

Chrome/Windows 10/Vincent

That’s the URL I’m going to.

I just checked it. Here are the top responses:

Military equipment in parks - I started it in September 30. The most recent post is October 23. (This one is valid.)

Pizza question: which answer is right? - I started it in May 2017; most recent post is Jun 2017.

I’m calling bullshit on wine story - I started it in Nov 2014; most recent post is May 2015.

Complicity for the Holocaust in occupied countries - I started in Apr 2015; most recent post is Apr 2015.

What appears to be happening is that somehow old threads I started are having some of the posts at the end of the threads marked as unread. (Even though I have read them.) Because these are “my” threads and the software considers I have unread responses in them, this is what it’s sending me to.

It appears to be an ongoing issue. I can click the “unread” link and see a thread with supposedly unread responses. I open the thread. I then check back and the thread is marked as having no unread posts. But if I click the “unread” link again, some of these threads will once again show they have unread posts in them.

That looks like a software glitch of some sort.

Let’s move this to Site Feedback (from ATMB) so that the Discourse developers will see it.
