This morning I was reading my Unread feed here and noticed that there were a bunch of threads whose last posts were years ago.
Did they all get bumped by a spammer or troll who then got cornfielded, or is something else going on?

An example or two would help.
For example:
I note it only pops up in my Unread feed, not Latest, so maybe Discourse is just snagging old threads for some reason.
And, ironically, this one just popped up.
Weirdness indeed. There are no signs of a spammer or any mod activity.
Is it your unread feed or the Related Topics are the bottom of a thread?
They throw up old threads all the time.
Unread feed for some reason. I’ll try clearing my cache and see if that helps for some reason.
I checked, the last Discourse update was 4 days ago.
I guess we have to see if anyone else is having this issue.
Hopefully clearing the cache takes care of this.
My own list of Tracking threads (IOW those that would appear in Unread if bumped) measures in the 10s of thousands.
I have seen zero unexpected old threads pop up. Not today, not yesterday, and not any time in the last months.
For sure my list and the OP’s list may be pretty disjoint. But I offer one bit bit of anecdata that the issue is peculiar to the OP’s setup.
If the OP has multiple devices, e.g. a phone and a PC, it might be interesting / informative for them to look on both devices at once and see if the results are the same or different.
I’m having this problem, and in addition, I no longer get the Unread feed at the bottom of a page, only the Suggested feed and the Related feed. I wish I could get the unread feed back!
I’ll give it try - I do read and post on both phone and computer.
Did you know all those feeds are also shown as clickable links in the hamburger menu at the top of the page under the [Shortcuts] section?
Its happened to me. I want to reply and then realize I don’t want to resurrect.
That’s nice to know but I would like to have my unread at the bottom of the page again like it’s always been since we came to this format. Your method works ok but gives me a page with a bunch of stuff I do not need and is an extra step I do not need. Also, makes me curious about the change: why and what else is changed.
@kayT, the Discourse-classic Theme shows unread and new threads at the bottom, if there are any. what theme are you using?
The same is happening to me and I wish it wasn’t. Something changed somewhere unannounced.
I now have to be watchful and take added steps to get back to my true ‘unreads’ via the hamburger menu.
Seems like someone fixed something that wasn’t broken. Grrrr….and, BTW, get off my lawn.
[and, FWIW, attention: @What_Exit. I use an iPhone 12 Pro and a second gen iPad Pro almost as antique as I am.]
I doubt it is the Operating system/Hardware or even Browser. But it may be the Theme. But data points do help if we bump this up to the Discourse Staff.
As it is, I’m going to move the thread to Site Feedback as it seems like a better location than About This Message Board
Thanks, What_Exit. I’m using Sam’s Simple Theme as my interface.
If you’re up to testing, trying switching to Discourse-classic and see if the problem goes away.
When I try to follow your instructions to find my theme, I click on Avatar and do not get Preferences, the last symbol is Profile. If I try to click again to get the gear symbol there is no gear symbol. Anyone else have any help to find my theme (which has not been changed by me since my original setup on this site which was a long time ago and my memory is not that good!).
And oddly enough now I get my Unread things coming up with the Suggested thing but then go on to get a lot of other stuff and don’t know if I get all my unread things or just some. This was not happening before I cleared my cache.
