Is there a good Metroid game for the Wii?

I have never played a Metroid game in my life, but have always considered playing Metroid Prime. Anyway, I’m disappointed(and kind of shocked) that the Metroid Trilogy on the Wii is super expensive. I expected to pay $20-$30 and see that it sells for way more than that.

Anyway, is there a good Metroid game on the Wii? Metroid Other M or even skip the first two and play Metroid 3?

I guess I could get the gamecube copies of the first two and just play them on the Wii.

Thoughts? Do the Wii ones control OK with the Wiimote?

Thanks!

Super Metroid is on the Virtual Console.

I believe the Metroid Trilogy didn’t have the biggest run, so copies are limited and hence expensive. There’s not really that much of a storyline, so you could jump in with MP3. For what it’s worth, I HATED the control scheme, but I seem to be in a minority in that. I don’t want to be forced to sit up in front of the TV and point at it to shoot, I far preferred the GC way with a controller in hand, sitting however I wished.

I own Other M but have never even got it out of the shrinkwrap. I really should try it one day.

Other M is complete shit. Avoid it if you’ve ever had any love for the franchise.

Yeah, I think part of my reasons for never having played it is that between ordering it online and the getting it I managed to read several less than complementary reviews. At the time I was buying far too many games and so I had plenty of other things to play.

Metroid Prime 1 is a masterpiece, even with standard gamecube controls, so definitely get that one. As for actual Wii games, Prime 3 is also great. I do think the first one is the best of the trilogy so it’d be a shame to miss out on that one.

No it isn’t. The story was awkwardly told but the gameplay was really solid and had some great bosses. It’s a shame that Team Ninja will never get another shot at the franchise because of things outside of their control. The crappy story is pretty much all Nintendo’s fault.

I didn’t find the story as offensive as others, it’s just really bland with a couple of questionable elements. Didn’t prevent me from enjoying the game though.

Anyone have the Prime trilogy for Wii they wanna let me borrow? I kind of want to try all three.

I just bought the trilogy for the Wii for $29 on amazon, so I’m good.

I can update and give folks thoughts if you like. I’m only just over a decade behind and have three popular games ahead of me now.

If anyone has a WiiU, the Wii version of the prime trilogy will be released on the eShop on the 29th. It will be $20, and for the first week it’s on sale for $10. If nothing else, this should drop the price of the Wii disc.

Oh. Oh well. I guess $29 was a great deal at least for now.

Yeah, from what I’ve seen the trilogy has been going for a lot more than $29, that’s for sure.

Gamestop made a deal a few years back to have Metroid Prime Trilogy reprinted (like they did with Xenosaga) so it’s not nearly as pricey as it once was, unless you insist on the steelbook case or sealed (Gamestop reprints weren’t sealed and used a standard Wii case).

Meh, I ordered it as the disc only, which I rarely do. I just want to play the game; I can live without the packaging if it saves me $20 or more. Besides, I may not enjoy it.

Love Zelda, love Okami, love other games that seem similar(exploration, platforming, some fighting). I’ve never been a fan of shooting games, but I guess this one is doable.

If not, I guess I’ll sell it.

Since you have a Wii and not a Wii U, this news doesn’t affect you, but the Wii U eShop will soon allow downloading some Wii titles. Some of the earliest scheduled are Metroid Prime Trilogy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. They will retail for $20. Good on Nintendo for embracing their eShop more to include Wii titles. The only thing left is Gamecube games.

Story here

Unlike Wii titles, which can use the same Wii backwards compatibility as Wii disks, Gamecube games would have have to be emulated like they have to do with other platforms, which means a big performance hit. Maybe significant portions could be virtualized (running on native hardware_ since the Wii hardware is similar, but it’s still a lot harder than just allowing Wii mode to read data off the hard drive.

Though I do note that Nintendo has stated plans to put GameCube games on VC.

I got the trilogy in the mail today and will start Prime in a little bit.

I tested the disc for about 5 minutes. Yikes, it is going to take some getting used to these controls!

I have played to the point of getting the spider ball, which feels like roughly half-way to me, though I have no actual idea how long Metroid Prime is.

Anyway, I have been scanning and reading things and it seems like this game is going to devolve into a “find all 12 artifacts” fetch quest kind of thing near the end. Like finidng the pieces of the Triforce in Wind Waker.

Vague clues were on some pillars I saw(and scanned), but I have no idea how those clues could help anyone find all 12 artifacts.

Anyway, does the game really halt near the end and require a gigantic 12-part fetch quest? Weird, if so.

Yes, one of the big complaints about Prime 1 is the boring end game backtracking you have to do. I stuck it out and enjoyed the final boss fight, and felt it was worth it. I may have looked at a FAQ a few times just to speed this part along.

I started playing Primes 2 and 3 but I don’t remember getting very far.

Other M:

I’m another person that actually enjoyed Other M.

The story is a bit sexist and feels inspired by bad anime cliches. However, I have a high tolerance for such things and can laugh them off. For example, in the beginning Samus can’t user her more advanced equipment until authorized by Commander Adam (which makes no sense for several reasons). But, they always have to come up with some ridiculous reason why Samus loses all of her powers at the beginning of every game, so I just rolled my eyes and got on with it.

The combat system was quite good. The dodge / sensemove system makes fights with run of the mill space pirates a lot more interesting, and allows for some cool, almost God of War style boss takedowns.

Holy crap. The decent into the Phazon mines owned my butt big time. I died once and barely struggled through with my second, more strategic attempt. I think the save points were way, way too far between in that section. I descended, solved a spider-ball puzzle, fought off waves of power-pirates(as I call them), fought an Elite Pirate guy who was kind of tough, and then fought an invisible boss who could not be locked on to. And solved an easy spider-ball maze.

One one save. About 1 hour of struggle that one could lose if they die.

That was honestly freaking me out at the end.

I am now using a guide to collect all the Artifacts.

Back when I first played it (on my import switchable US/Japan spice GameCube) I actually gave up at this point. I didn’t play for several weeks, I just couldn’t do it. Then I bought a new surround system and wanted to test some games out, so I slapped Metroid Prime in. I wasn’t concentrating that hard and thus wasn’t stressed, so obviously I breezed through it first time. Definitely the hardest point of the game for me.
