Is there a movement to redesign the American flag?

In one of the semi-local newspapers, there’s an opinion piece from somebody waxing indignant about a move to redesign the American flag. He doesn’t say what anyone’s trying to get it designed to or from; he seems to be talking about the official flag, not any of the I-don’t-know-how-many takeoffs on it; but he blames it on the generic “Left”, and he’s agin it.

Anybody know what he’s talking about?

I haven’t heard anything about it, but did a quick search. Seems like it’s not an “official” thing but an Olympic Thing.
And like most artificial outrage, it comes from Fox/Hannity.

The Olympic thing is probably what your paper was ranting about, but I HAVE seen designs for a 51 and 52 star flag, in case Puerto Rico or DC become states. But that’s not really a “redesign” since “13 stripes and 1 star per state” would still be the design.

I don’t foresee the basic design of the US flag changing. If we acquire another state or two we’ll rearrange the stars, but that’s it.

They spend a tremendous amount of time looking for things to be outraged about, don’t they?

I’ve seen this mentioned in right wing Facebook posts, usually accompanied by people wanting the anthem changed as well. I’ve never heard anyone of consequence calling for the anthem to be changed nor have I heard anyone say they want to change the flag, other than add DC and/or PR and thus add stars.

I made the mistake of reading the comments on the Fox News story on this. (I was looking to see what the proposed logo would look like.)

“We don’t need your new flag, we already have our own,” says group that regularly waves “thin blue line” flag.

Here’s the logo if you don’t want to give Fox News any clicks:

What’s funny is that apparently no one has any issues with the current logo:

Heh, that’s pretty true. Also, the Gadsden Flag, and also wraps themselves up in stylized flag clothing that also don’t have 50 stars or 13 stripes.

Sure, but you would only want to hump the real thing.

I’m starting to think that Biden should do some corrupt or illegal things, just to get the right wing something real to focus on. Man, this Hannity Flag thing is really stupid, even by Hannity standards.

Ah. That’s probably it.

Thanks.

My, that’s ugly. If we of the Generic Blameable Left were going to redesign the flag, I’d hope we could do better than that.

Yeah, that’s really what it looked like.

Whether I’ll get around to writing the paper about it is another question. It’s not just a letter, it’s a columnist.

All the while complaining about “political correctness gone wild” and “offendinistas”.

And whining about other people being snowflakes who get butthurt at the slightest provocation.

More projection than a multiplex, eh.

I might not get much support for this, but I’ve always felt the American flag should get redesigned, so that in the middle (with entirely white background) there’s a small black star, then a plus sign, then the number 50, then an equals sign, and then, finally, a smiley-face dude with thumbs up (drawn 1940s ad illustrator style) underneath the pride-inducing equation.

I’m thinking the right wing media would get behind this if the flag would feature a boot stamping on a human face, forever.

So what if the flag gets replaced? It’s just an inanimate symbol, not a living thing. And, AFAIK, not even one person has died “to protect the flag”. Now, plenty of people (idiots, one and all) have threatened various levels of harm to those who somehow “disprespect the flag”. The current flag isn’t even the flag Key wrote about. The flag has been redesigned throughout its history. Heck, the original one (the one with the Union Jack in it) wasn’t even original. If the country which is sybmolized by the flag wants a different flag, one that the population feels truly represents it, go for it.

In the Civil War era, it was a big deal to capture the enemy’s flag. Some soldiers even got medals for doing that. So it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if someone actually died just to protect his company’s or regiment’s flag. Not that I have any specific examples, though.

Which idiots are almost always themselves disrespecting the flag, by doing things like defacing it with a blue stripe, or wearing it, or flying it after dark or in the rain. Seriously, folks, the Flag Code is only, like, a page long. It’s easy to read.
