In one of the semi-local newspapers, there’s an opinion piece from somebody waxing indignant about a move to redesign the American flag. He doesn’t say what anyone’s trying to get it designed to or from; he seems to be talking about the official flag, not any of the I-don’t-know-how-many takeoffs on it; but he blames it on the generic “Left”, and he’s agin it.
I haven’t heard anything about it, but did a quick search. Seems like it’s not an “official” thing but an Olympic Thing.
And like most artificial outrage, it comes from Fox/Hannity.
The Olympic thing is probably what your paper was ranting about, but I HAVE seen designs for a 51 and 52 star flag, in case Puerto Rico or DC become states. But that’s not really a “redesign” since “13 stripes and 1 star per state” would still be the design.
I’ve seen this mentioned in right wing Facebook posts, usually accompanied by people wanting the anthem changed as well. I’ve never heard anyone of consequence calling for the anthem to be changed nor have I heard anyone say they want to change the flag, other than add DC and/or PR and thus add stars.
I’m starting to think that Biden should do some corrupt or illegal things, just to get the right wing something real to focus on. Man, this Hannity Flag thing is really stupid, even by Hannity standards.
I might not get much support for this, but I’ve always felt the American flag should get redesigned, so that in the middle (with entirely white background) there’s a small black star, then a plus sign, then the number 50, then an equals sign, and then, finally, a smiley-face dude with thumbs up (drawn 1940s ad illustrator style) underneath the pride-inducing equation.
So what if the flag gets replaced? It’s just an inanimate symbol, not a living thing. And, AFAIK, not even one person has died “to protect the flag”. Now, plenty of people (idiots, one and all) have threatened various levels of harm to those who somehow “disprespect the flag”. The current flag isn’t even the flag Key wrote about. The flag has been redesigned throughout its history. Heck, the original one (the one with the Union Jack in it) wasn’t even original. If the country which is sybmolized by the flag wants a different flag, one that the population feels truly represents it, go for it.
In the Civil War era, it was a big deal to capture the enemy’s flag. Some soldiers even got medals for doing that. So it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if someone actually died just to protect his company’s or regiment’s flag. Not that I have any specific examples, though.
Which idiots are almost always themselves disrespecting the flag, by doing things like defacing it with a blue stripe, or wearing it, or flying it after dark or in the rain. Seriously, folks, the Flag Code is only, like, a page long. It’s easy to read.
