Not cigarette but a noticable fireplace type smoke smell. I would prefer not to dryclean if possible as I have heard dry cleaning chemicals strip off the natural oils of the down feathers, and it is this property that maintins the down insulations springiness and loft. Any other way to get rid of this smell non destructively.
Some down jackets can be washed, although if yours doesn’t say it can be, then I guess you’d be taking a chance. I have several Land’s End down coats and I’ve always washed them (according to their directions) with a mild detergent in the washer and then dried them with several clean tennis balls in the dryer (knocks the feathers around so they don’t clump).
Have you tried an odor-removing product like Febreeze?
Try running it through the dryer on air (no heat) with a dryer sheet for 20 minutes or so. Putting clean tennis balls in there too can help. I do this with smokey clothes on the rare occasions I go to bars, and with down pillows to freshen them up.
I usually just hang them outside for a day or two… but in the shade to prevent fading.
Don’t think that even dry-cleaning is a magic wand.
My girlfriend is a dry-cleaning shop manager, and she says:
[ul][li]It depends on if it was caused by smoke damage (burning house) as opposed to “hangs by the fireplace”. Smoke damage penetrates very deep and rarely comes out[/li][li]It also depends on how long the smell has been there. If it’s been years, it’s probably not going to go away.[/li][li]It will probably be expensive to dry-clean if you end up going that route, be aware.[/li]Most dry-cleaning places would really prefer that you don’t do anything chemical to it before bringing it in. Dry-cleaning is done with chemicals and if you’ve treated the item with chemicals, there’s no telling what could happen.[/ul]
