Is there a way to stop Windows 10(Home) from locking every time I close the computer?

I have a new laptop and it is working very well. Windows 10, Home Edition.

Oddly enough, that is the same system my old 2012 laptop was running on. When I closed the lid on that laptop, it went into regular standby. When opened, it did not require a PIN or password to resume operation.

On my new PC(Lenova Ideapad), I have set it up to go to standby when I close the lid. However, it always “locks” and requires my PIN when I turn it on. It’s not that big of a deal; I can enter my PIN quickly.

However, I would like to go back to my old PC’s settings. I only want it to lock when I lock it myself, not when I close the lid and send it to standby. I want the PC to resume with no password or PIN required when I open the lid.

Am I missing something? I do not see it anywhere in the settings.

In Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options click on “Choose what closing the lid does” and set it to “do nothing” when it’s plugged in.

  1. Settings > System > Power & Sleep. Select Additional power settings from the right menu.
  2. On the left of the resulting Power Options menu, select Choose what closing the lid does.
  3. You’ll see options for the power and sleep buttons. Under When I close the lid, change the dropdown box for Plugged in to Do nothing.
  4. If you like, you can also change the setting for On battery.
  5. Click Save Changes and you’re good to go.

I tried that, but now I think it literally does nothing except turn off the monitor. I do want the computer to go to standby(or sleep). I just don’t want it to require a PIN or password when it resumes/wakes-up.

My 2012 computer(again, also on Windows 10 Home) goes to sleep. Turns off display, stops fan and hard drive, is basically asleep. However, when I re-open the lid, it just kind of wakes up without requiring a password.

My new one goes to sleep, which I like. However, it requires a PIN everytime it wakes up.

Anyway to get it to work like my other one?

How to skip password prompt after sleep using Settings

Open Settings.
Click on Accounts.
Click on Sign-in options.

Under “Require sign-in,” choose Never from the drop-down menu to complete the task.

I’m working on a German language Win 10, so the terms may be a bit different, but try it like this:

Go to Windows Setting - Accounts - Login Options. Scroll down to “Login required”, there’s a drop down control where you can change the options.

ETA: ninja’d by dolphinboy. So it’s called sign-in options in English.

It is now. Don’t worry–they’ll change it to something else before you know it.

This is it. Thank you!

Well, I just looked at my sign-in options and never was already set. Nonetheless, it sometimes asks for a PIN. My previous computer allowed a blank password, but this one (about two weeks old) doesn’t. I wonder how short the PIN can be.
