I now think that setting a thread to 'Watching’ is more or less equivalent to subscribing on the old board. It means that you get a notification every time someone posts something new to the thread. You will see the notifications popping up on your avatar. There’s a notification icon at the bottom of the scroll bar (and at the bottom of the page) where you can change the notification status of a thread, so it’s always easy to do.
