I never read the comic book, but someone referred me to the trailer.
Wow.
That is the coolest shit I have seen in a long while. I hope the movie lives up to the trailer. It can be found at www.apple.com/trailers.

Okay, yeah. I was all set to come in here and piss all over the thread, since I’m not a fan of the comic or Frank Miller in general, and the movie’s been getting a lot of hype around here.
But that trailer is just cool.
Damn, now I’m going to have to see it.
I gotta say thought that that image of Bruce Willis slumped against the tree looks far more like he’s taking an agonising piss than suffering heart pain.
If the movie is half as cool as the trailer, I won’t be disappointed.
That was great. I presume they’re adapting {i]That Yellow Bastard*, which is still my all-time favorite Sin City story.
Looks like the movie is going to include Sin City (Marv), The Big Fat Kill (Dwight), and That Yellow Bastard (Hartigan), although the IMDB page lists characters from A Dame To Kill For as well. I’m assuming the movie will be broken into three distinct vignettes that tie together and overlap at points, much like Pulp Fiction, but I could be wrong.
I went to high school with the visual effects producer. (Damn, I wish I’d kept in touch!) I was “meh” on this movie until I saw the trailer - it looks like it’s gonna be a good ride.
Film noir. When it’s done well, it’s the definition of “cool”.
I’m really into Sin City, and I love the trailer. However, I think the best praise was last night from a female friend of mine who was a long-time reader of SC. She’s been looking forward to seeing the trailer for a long, long time (I’ve been telling her about it, her computer isn’t up to seeing it). Showed it to her last night, and after various gasps durring the viewing, simply said,
“Okay, I’m a little wet now.”
Yes - this trailer looks ultra-cool. Much as I like Elijah Wood, I can’t figure what he’s doing in this movie, though.
Can anybody out there on the board give me some background on the comic book/story? Thanks in advance
You should try to find the ~6 minute Comicon preview that made the rounds on the internet a couple of months ago, if you can find it.
And if you show it to your friend, you’d better wear a raincoat.
You can download it from here. I can’t wait for it to come out…
I’ve been reading the books lately (for the first time), and I can’t wait for the movie. The Comicon trailer is amazing, especially “The Customer is Always Right”. I can’t believe how well they’ve transferred the look of the books to the screen.
I imagined Hartigan as much older than Bruce Willis is, but Mickey Rourke is so perfect as Marv that I’ll let it go.
Warning, MAJOR spoilers follow. Read if you wish, but it’ll give away major plot points and a great out-of-left-field casting decision.
Marv (Mickey Rourke’s character) is a violent but relatively good-hearted brute who spends one night with a beautiful woman named Goldie, only to find her dead when he wakes up. He is framed for her murder and sets out to find the real killer. This brings him into conflict with a lot of people in Basin City, and leads him to a creepy farm in the middle of nowhere, where he meets Kevin (Elijah Wood’s character). Kevin is a tiny little guy with glasses, who never once speaks. However, he is a brutal fighter who even does a good job kicking Marv’s ass for a while. He is also a serial killer and a cannibal, and he has a room in the farmhouse where the walls are aligned with women’s heads, much like animal head trophies in a hunting lodge. At some point, Marv’s parole officer Lucille (Carla Gugino’s character) is also captured by Kevin, and she wakes up to find her hand removed. She tries to help Marv escape, but doesn’t make it. When Marv gets his chance, he extracts some really nasty revenge on little Kevin, only to find out he wasn’t even behind it all… the murder and frame-job run much deeper and go much higher.
And believe it or not, I didn’t even give everything away! Best of all, Marv’s story arc is only one of the three intersecting stories that will make up the Sin City movie.
Pretty damn cool, although the chin appliance on Mickey Rourke is distracting and unnecessary.
“Is there a word to describe how cool ‘Sin City’ looks?”
Yes. Scrumtrulescent.
Wow.
