Is there an 'app' for thus forum?

Like a Tapatalk app or something?

I’m typing from my phone and my misspellings make me look ‘thicker’ than usual.

Also, if there is, shouldn’t there be a sticky about it?:o

Thanks!

Some folks use tapatalk on this site.

Or you could end each post with “Sent from my iPhone” and everyone will assume you fat-fingered it.

Whenever I’ve first accessed SDMB on an iOS or Android device it has prompted me of its own initiative as to if I want to use Tapatalk (my answers: phone, yes; tablet, no, I’ll use the browser). So yes, I did not realize that some people had to actually *look *for the app.

Is there a way to turn off the prompt for tapatalk? I am using an iPad, and every time I visit, I get a prompt asking me if I want to use tapatalk.

I hate that prompt. It even comes up when I use adblock, so there must be a setting I need to find.

Help, anyone?

I haven’t been able to verify if I’m correct, but I haven’t seen it in quite awhile. It’s a popup & I have Settings->Safari->Block Pop-ups switched on.

I just checked, and I have block pop-ups switched on as well.

It comes up every time I come to the straight dope, whether I am logged into the site or not.

Drives me bonkers. There has to be a setting somewhere, but I don’t have a clue.

Thanks for the try.

Anyone else?

I don’t use an iPad for SDMB, but I do have one. Have you gone into the iPad settings app & scrolled down to the bottom to see what settings are available for the tapatalk app?

I just did. And it had “Allow notifications” checked. I removed that, so let’s see what happens.

I never thought of this before, because I had no idea I even had tapatalk on my ipad. I have never used it, and have no recollection of downloading it.

Thank you for suggesting this. If it works, I owe you a beer!

(I’ll update this thread when I know for sure it either did or didn’t work. I am going to reboot my iPad, even though I shouldn’t have to for this setting to work).

Unfortunately, it didn’t work.

Whenever I go to straightdope.com, I get a popup saying that this forum has an app that it can be viewed in, called tapatalk. It gives me two choices, either I can learn more about tapatalk (and it takes me to the app store), or I ignore it.

If anyone needs the exact wording if the popup, let me know.

I have seen it in two different scenarios, but it ALWAYS pops up.

  1. when I go to straightdope.com, like I mentioned above, it appears, or
  2. if I go to straightdope.com and it doesn’t appear, as soon as I click the “forums” button, I get the tapatalk popup.

This seems to be tied to the straightdope site itself, and/or the bulletin board software the SDMB uses. Somehow, tapatalk is permitted to pop up a notification on my iPad telling me about the app, since the app will work with the SDMB.

I have never used the app, but since I have it, I am going to try it. If I don’t like it, I will delete it, but I doubt this will solve the problem.

Interestingly, I don’t get the tapatalk pop-up from any other message board I use, and I am pretty sure a number of them use the same software.

I will report back with any findings. And if anyone has any other thoughts, by all means, share them.

Thanks!

Tapatalk Ad Popup
“A powerful new release, but seemingly an odd choice for the holiday season. The plot centers on an iPad beset by what at first seems to be a run-of-the-mill affliction with a quick cure. A heady ride, as once-promising vistas lead to obscure glimpses of despair. Ultimately a kind of Deus-ex-machina appears promising a salvation which is never delivered. So it’s a (post)Christian fable after all, a story where Nietzsche leads to Godot, narrated by someone just realizing a troubled doubt.”–Thread Update Weekly

Tapatalk malware
“…[Leo Bloom] returns with the same question, this time a laconic essay with a shocking conclusion which in retrospect seems inevitable.”–SD Review
Why does Tapatalk malware only activate (with me) on SDMB?
“…Bloom is back, presumably for the last time, with this a post-modern Job’s cri-de-coeur. The brutally swift reply is his voice from the whirlwind.”–vB Notes

Why is the Tapatalk forced pop-up not treated with the same ferocity as other advertising malware? “…Leo Bloom’s Job is back at it, having learned nothing and even angrier than before. The focus is different and presents a gentleness seeming to turn away his wrath, and we forced us to consider about the possibility of true post-Judaic comforters. Bloom remains silent–a bizarrely satisfying conclusion to his 21st-century Pilgrim’s Progress. Imitatio Dei indeed.”–“Internet Bitching and Modernity,” Topics in Moderator Behavioral XI, 2014.

Yes. It’s called Thus Spake Zarathrusta.

Obviously, I am late to this party. But I looked at all of the threads you have linked, and I see no solution.

Baseed on what Giraffe wrote (and I just went to the Giraffeboards to see what would hapoen, and I DIDN’T get the annoying pop-up), it would seem this is controlled by something within the vBulletin software. Giraffe opted to check the box to not permit this annoying pop-up to be seen on his site, but the SDMB has opted to not check this option…

Is this correct, or have I misunderstood?

I don’t care if people use tapatalk, and I highly doubt that asking to not see this pop-up will keep people from using tapatalk if they so choose. However, I am tired of dealing with this pop-up.

I don’t recall when it started, but it was definitely last year sometime. I don’t spend a ton of time in ATMB, and I missed the previous threads on it (obviously), but I have had it with this pop-up.

It is annoying. I don’t want tapatalk. I don’t want to have to clear a damn pop-up before I can access the SDMB.

Can anything be done about this?

Thanks.

By the way, for anyone wondering if the link **John DiFool **supplied was a solution to the problem, it’s not. I have no idea if it is a joke, or if I missed something, but it takes you to YouTube, and it forces you to watch a 15 second commercial before playing the theme to 2001. So, if you think it is going to help, don’t waste your time clicking on the link.

If John DiFool’s post means something to you and/or you understand the intent, feel free to click on the link. I just figured I’d save folks’ time if you thought it would help you kill this pop-up.

Only thing is, that (the part about Giraffe checking an opt-out box in his vBulletin software) doesn’t seem to explain why it’s just you having this issue. I’ll keep looking because I know I’ve gotten this pop-up in the past, I now don’t, and I now no longer know why I don’t.

Thanks. I appreciate it!

I am trying to figure out why it’s happening also, so if I discover the cause, I’ll post the solution.

I have done all the standard things, like clearing my cache, rebooting my iPad, etc. I also removed tapatalk from my iPad (I honestly don’t recall when I downloaded it, but I must have… When I opened it, I didn’t recognize the app at all, and I didn’t have anything selected, so I never used it… That I know of, anyway).

I am now on a quest.

The research I’ve done so far indicates that

  1. this is a problem that is being complained about ALOT.
  2. almost all the google hits I’ve read so far are instructions on the tapatalk support site from tapatalk techs to bulletin board managers who want to turn off the pop-up because their users are complaining.
  3. the tapatalk techs claim that if you accept cookies, a user should only see the pop-up once. This is NOT the case for everyone, but tapatalk techs can’t seem to understand why this is the case (yeah, right). So they give the site admins the work-arounds required, which is a code change somewhere in the bulletin board software. It’s not complicated, but it can’t be done by a user. It has to be done on the SDMB side of things.

I also found a link to a program called tapashutup, but I have no idea if it works or if it is from a reputable site. The author is in Russia, so I have my doubts. The only other way people have stopped it is to jailbreak their iPad.

This seems to be a LOT of work to remove this pop-up. Also, it bugs me that their model seems to be forcing people to allow cookies; blocking cookies supposedly generates this pop-up. I am not blocking cookies, and I still get the pop-up, but dammit I should be able to visit the SDMB without being forced to accept cookies.

-still looking for a work around.

I can’t believe I am the only one using an iPad out here that has this problem… Ok, Leo Bloom also… But that is it? Only the two of us?

I started a whole thread on this Tapatalk nagging.

Tapatalk nagging on mobile Tapatalk nagging on mobile - About This Message Board - Straight Dope Message Board

It seems that this has been brought up numerous times. In almost every thread, the same thing occurs. A complaint is raised, TubaDiva comes into the thread promising to check it out or ask Jerry, and the thread dies with no resolution.

Giraffe has told the board on at least two separate occasions what the solution is. This needs an alteration on the SDMB side.

I don’t care if it’s 5 people being bugged by this or 500… It is a simple fix, and I am asking TPTB to please fix this issue. Or tell me how to properly address this issue on the board. Do I need to start a brand new thread? Do I need to send a PM to someone?

To be honest, I would bet there are more people who see this pop-up and just deal with it. I know I have for months. But now that I have seen other comments/complaints about it, I know it’s not just me.

FWIW, I installed tapatalk on my Windows phone and tried SDMBing with it. No popups yet after a few reading sessions.

FWIW, I tried this on my tablet. It’s an android not an ipad, but it did come up with a popup saying that there was an android app available for this site. I only got the popup once, as you say the tapatalk techs say should happen. It didn’t come up repeatedly for me the way it does for you.

It’s an android tablet using chrome. Tapatalk is installed on it.

Do you have a link to the info from Giraffe?
