Is there an embargo on the Dave Clark Five?

As some of you are aware, I’m scouring the Net, trying to get the most CDs that I want the most for the least money. Thanks to all those who provided links and hints, I’ve amassed a good haul for just under $100!

But one of my searches proved fruitless. I cannot, for love or money, find anything by the Dave Clark Five! (And yes, I tried inputting them as “Dave Clark 5” as well.) Not a sausage.

Are their recordings caught in some kind of copyright snare! No biggie; just wondering.

[sub]I’m in pieces, bits and pieces…[/sub]

I’ve seen their movie, The Ghost Goes Gear on DVD. That was in the past couple of years, and I would imagine any legal wrangling would have affected that as well.
Sorry I can’t help with the CDs.

Musiccdvideo seem to have 2 available.

Rilchiam, try searching using “Dave Clark”, this seems to get the best results. I found over 300 hits on GEMM.

However, there does seem to be somewhat of a shortage! All of the hits I got were for used CDs, LPs, etc. (There is a set of 7 CDs – “History of the Dave Clark Five”, for example – only available used.) And the prices seem to be collector prices, in the $22-$35 range.

The one that seems to be the most available (still used, though) is “History of the Dave Clark Five” which seems to be in the $25 price range when available.

Hmmm… maybe I’ll look into why there are no new CDs available and report back.

Good hunting!

Thanks, guys!

OK, reporting back.

Apparently, Dave Clark holds all the rights and he is slow in releasing them on CD, possibly waiting for just the right time.

According to The Dave Clark Five USA page, “In the USA, the only licensed, significant CD is the compilation ‘A History of the Dave Clark Five’, a 2-CD set of 50 songs.”

The “History of the Dave Clark Five” is apparently an unlicensed copy from vinyl to CD by a German company “Rockin’Beat”. The US distributor is Compact Disk Europe, if you go to their page, they list about 20 items by the Dave Clark Five. They also charge collector’s prices for them, about $30 and up.

Oops, I just realized that both sets of CDs have approximately the same name. “A History of the Dave Clark Five” is the authorized 2-CD version. The “History of the Dave Clark Five” (less the indefinite article) is the unauthorized 7-CD version.

I hope that’s more clear!

Yes, thank you! But I don’t like them that much.

Spooky!

I just looked at my Roling Stone Album Guide, which admittedly is out of date(1992).

They have NO LISTING for the Dave Clark Five. Not under Dave, nor Clark, nor Five.

Well, DVD Empire claims to be able to get the 2-CD set (new) for $18.74 – but they also say that it is “special order” and will take 2 weeks.

You might try contacting them directly to make sure that they can actually get the CD.

Oh, and a review of the 2-CD set mentions that 40 of the 50 songs are in mono, if that makes a difference to you.

No, thanks. I just want a few songs. I’m sure I can find a used record for Friend Across Town to copy, if my urge becomes uncontrollable.

He’s waiting for 1965?
