is there an MMORPG that I can try without buying anything?

I’m a nerd, and I know that nerds love MMORPGs. Since I seem to have a ton of time to kill lately, I’d like to give one a try - but I don’t want to just go out and buy something. I thought “City of Heroes” looked cool, but the only way to find out would be to just buy thye $50 game and sign up.

Is there anything I can download a demo version of to play a trial?

Usually only the smaller fringe ones have such trial periods. Which really sucks considering how extremely expensive these games are.

Starwars Galaxies had a trial period offered. I don’t know if they still do.

Everquest had a month’s trial period offer (with free download of the original game and the first expansion) as of about three months ago. I don’t know why they wouldn’t still, but I don’t know for sure, as I’m a paid member now.

If you can find someone who bought the collector’s version of WoW, it comes with a 10 day trial for a friend.

The PC gamer I picked up last week - the one with World of Warcraft on the cover had a trial code for Galaxies. 10 days I think

There’s Ragnarok Online, but it’s mostly just a basic “kill, get stuff, level up” type game. You get 15 days free, but it’s still a huge download.

There’s also Priston Tale, also a huge download, since it’s actually the entire game. It’s your basic hack and slash game, so if you want something with more of a point, this isn’t it. Pretty graphics though, and there’s no time limit on the free trial–it ends only once one of your characters hits level 40. (Not that I got that far).

Okay, I’m not a nerd (or at least that’s my claim, and I’m sticking to it!), so I don’t know what a MMORPG is (see, that’s my proof that I’m not a nerd).

However, reading the post, I’m taking a stab that is a Multi-Media Online Role-Playing Game. Is that correct? Am I actually a nerd deep down and just don’t know it yet?

Thanks,
milquetoast

Close. Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game.

Thanks, jayjay!

I’d definitely try and get the 10 day free trial of WoW. There are several threads, and one of these fine dopers is bound to have bought the collector’s edition.

In the category of “Small game”, there’s also Puzzle Pirates, which has a free 10 use trial.

You pronounce it Mmum-Or-p-Gup.

I do, anyway.

If you’re a true nerd, you could check out the many text-based MUDS / MMORPGs online. Dragonrealms is pretty popular, and also Achaea. They both require a lot of time to get good at, especially Achaea, so be ready to get sucked in if you stay with it for a while. I actually had to force myself to quit a few years ago.

Second life has a 7 day trial and is pretty cool, though not really action oriented.

Of course, if you don’t mind actually buying a game, then most of the MMORPG’s come with 30 days for free. Or, you could go on eBay and buy someone else’s account I suppose…many times people sell lesser accounts for practically nothing. Or ask your friends if they have any old MMORPG games laying about. Myself I have copies of UO, AC, EQ, and DaoC laying about somewhere (and I think one or two more obscure MMORPG games). I never plan on playing them again…and there are lots of people in that boat. I’m sure someone would be willing to give you the disk…and then all you’d have to do is reactivate the account for a month to try it out.

Personally I’d get WoW myself…but I’m biased as thats what I’m playing atm.
