Is there any point in rooting for the Cleveland Browns?

I took the Browns to the Super Bowl just this morning.

Yes, you are. The Lions last won the NFL Championship in 1957; the closest that the Lions have come since then was the 1991 NFC Championship game, which they lost to the Redskins.

The Browns last won the NFL Championship in 1964 (and then lost to the Packers in the 1965 NFL Championship game). They lost in the the AFC Championship game three times in four years ('86, '87, '89), with lots of heartbreak in there.

There’s no reason the Browns couldn’t go to the Superbowl.

They earn enough to be able to easily afford the tickets.

In baseball I am a Giants fan. I waited all my life until age 50 to see a World Series title. And then I saw 2 more titles in the next 4 years.

What Jackmanii said. Rooting for the Red Sox was not like rooting for the Browns. The Red Sox were good, just not good enough - like the 2000-2010 Phoenix Suns.

The Browns are/were consistently basement dwellers.

There’s no real point in rooting for any team. If you’re not the owner or a player on the team, how are you affected by a team winning or losing?

You support a team to be part of a community. And that community exists regardless of whether the team it is centered around is winning or losing.

Well, Jon Bois says they live in Hell, and he has the charts to back it up.

What about the Seattle Mariners? One year, they had the best record in 2 leagues, tying the all-time record for most wins in a season, but it was not enough to get them to the series. For the fans, they just never fail to disappoint.

Being a member of that community is a lot more fun when your team is winning.

If you’re only willing to be part of the community when the team is winning, then you’re not really part of the community. You’re just a visitor passing through.

In other words, it’s only more fun when you’re winning, if you’re also there when you’re losing.

Here’s a fun fact: four teams have won more than 110 games in a season, but only one won the World Series.

Seattle fans have a lot to be disappointed about, being one of only two fanbases who have never seen a World Series, but I’d say that’s different from the Browns. Seattle’s won a few things, they just never got past the ALCS. They’d have great players. the modern day Browns are just abysmal. They did have a couple of winning seasons, but for the last ten years have been just hideous.

That’ll just make it sweeter when they win.

So does road kill.

Not any more.

Shodan

The Browns will fail to make the playoffs due to not filing the correct paperwork before the deadline.

Right, because the Browns won the NFL championship four times and lost the championship game 7 times, including two missed opportunities to play in the NFL/AFL interleague championship. Interestingly, three of their championship losses and one of the victories were games against the Lions, another team that known for making its fans sad.

I got teased relentlessly at school because I was a 49er fan back when Steve DeBerg was their starting quarterback.

Because if you take your lumps now and get on the season ticket list, you can soak the bandwaggoners when they do turn it around. Pick your 3 games a year then and scalp the rest to make back much more than you ever invested in the losing seasons. Really the reason the Packers have such a long waiting list, the ones that held on during the gory years are cashing in on the secondary market.

Ain’t gonna live long enough. :frowning:

Hah! In St. Louis, there’s the famous story of the Rams fan who tried to get rid of a pair of extra tickets before a game. When there were no takers by the kickoff, he stuck the tickets on the windshield of a parked car and went into the game. When he came out after the game, there was another pair of tickets on the windshield next to his.

The Rams use zucchinis for tickets?
