This article (subscription may be required) in the Friday, July 9, 2004 edition of the Springfield, Illinois State Journal-Register mentioned a possible trade between the Boston Red Sox and the Chicago Cubs. Let me warn you now that the first several paragraphs are the (extremely long-winded) writer’s warm-up. You don’t actually get to the meat of the column until the tenth paragraph or so.
Anyway, the crux of the article is this: a possible trade between the Cubs and the Red Sox. Matt Clement for Nomar Garciaparra  !
Unfortunately, I can’t tell from the long-winded and rambling article whether there’s actual trade talk going on or if it’s just the columnist’s wishful thinking.
So, those who have access to Chicago media: is this a rumor with some truth to it, or just a fool’s hope?
I doubt Nomar would go to Chicago. He’s made it known that he’d like to finish up on the west coast.
Nomar for Randy Johnson? I’d like to see that. I even heard the possibility of Clemens coming to Boston for the remainder of the season. Don’t know how that would work, but it’s an interesting possibility.
Sure, except he’s a free agent at the end of the year so he could go where he pleased.
It would probably be a good trade for both teams involved, but who knows. I’ve also heard the Sporting News mention a Clement for Percival trade which would be a great trade for the Angels, but a lousy one for the Cubs so I don’t think that’s going to happen.
Nomar would have no choice on where he goes for the rest of this year. AFAIK, he does not have a no trade clause nor is he a “10 and 5” guy who can veto any trade.
Johnson, on the other hand, does have a no trade clause and will probably enforce it since he is still under contract for next year, unless the team trading for him is really desirable (i.e. on the West Coast).
That being said, with Nomar being a free agent who will not be coming back, the Sox would be wise to get something for him now and Clement is pretty decent…and the Cubs could use an upgrade at short. But with the way Nomar has been playing, it is debatable if he is an upgrade.
Arizona won’t be trading Randy this year, or even next year until they can field a half-way decent team. They have enough problems selling tickets without losing their most popular player.
Are you kidding me? He’s been playing great since he got back. He’s got his OPS above .800, which is fantastic for being back a month. He’ll have his typical torrid second half, and would be a great addition for a playoff-contending Cubs (especially considering their current SS situation).
The reports in Boston this week have been that RJ would be “willing to waive the no-trade clause of his contract to play for a contender – preferably the Yankees.” Barf.
This seems like quite the year for rumors with so many clubs in contention. I have heard of a rumor of Nomar being traded to the Angels, actually I think the Angels are named in most trade rumor stuff nowadays. But that is all it is rumors. There is a fine of $200K (I think that is what was stated as being the fine a few days ago on ESPNradio) for tampering. That means baseball people have to keep their mouths closed.
An interesting site that is a good source of baseball gossip (common isn’t that what rumor are) is MLB rumors .
My opinion is that this trade won’t go thru. Nomar is paid too much for how poorly he is performing this year. To contend a club wants someone who is having a good year when getting a “rent a player”.
