Is there anyone else out there who hates coffee?

For those that don’t like coffee, you haven’t yet tried the right beans. One sip of this chocolatey, smooth, and easy on the tummy coffee will have you changing your mind pronto like!

I tried coffee for the first time when I was in high school, and I didn’t like the taste, and I wasn’t told anything about it being burnt or stale or whatever; instead, I was just given the standard line about how one could, of course, add cream and sugar, because lots of people add cream and sugar, because they don’t like the taste of coffee; why, I certainly don’t take it black; I take it with, y’know, cream and sugar.

And I thought: but I can already grab a coke; I already like the taste just fine. Heck, consider the cherry coke; if you already like the taste of coke just fine, you can add some extra cherry goodness — just like you could, in effect, even add sugar and cream, if you’re in the mood for a float — but the point is, you’re not starting below zero and trying to break even; you’re already good, regardless of if you go for better.

I don’t recall anyone ever pushing a cherry coke by explaining that, sure, lots of people don’t like it black, and so we add stuff to mask the taste. But, time and again, coffee drinkers who talk like recruiters grant right at the start that, oh, hey, you and me both; how about some cream and sugar, to make it tolerable?

I enjoy coffee very much, I just mentioned that the addition of freeze-dried coffee to Cocoa is quick and quite tasty.

One disturbing development, a different sort of people who don’t like coffee - the folks in charge of fine-tuning the weather a hundred years from now are making rumbles about coffee - it is “problematic” don’tcha know.

I have always liked coffee, i didn’t acquire a taste for it as a kid, i LOVED the smell of coffee, and coffee ice cream was my favorite. The plain beverage was too bitter for my sensitive taste buds, but as I’ve gotten older and have duller senses, i enjoy a trace of bitter in many things. I even intentionally brew tea to be more bitter than most people prefer.

If you like the smell of coffee, but not the actual beverage, try adding milk. That’s way more effective than sugar at reducing bitterness, as the milk proteins bind to the tannins. (Or whatever makes it bitter.) But that’s not my advice to people who don’t like how coffee smells. If you don’t like the smell, well, you don’t like coffee. But many people like coffee, but not every aspect of coffee. That’s who cream and sugar is for.

Like the smell. Hate the taste. I have had excellent coffees and lattes and espressos in Italy and France and in fine coffee shops in the US. I have added cream and sugar. Still hate the taste. The good stuff is not as foul as the shitty stuff. Cream makes it less awful.

I also hate the taste, but don’t like the smell, of chocolate and any alcoholic drink. Don’t like tea either. Maybe it’s related.

The way so many people are literally addicted to their morning coffee is absurd. Like don’t even talk to me until I have had my coffee. And when you take a break you get insane headaches. It’s crazy.

Well, I moved into a fraternity house at the ripe old age of seventeen. Guess what was freely available from kegs every weekend!

Caffeine is addictive. :woman_shrugging: I need to have about the same amount of caffeine every day. That amount can be zero (i tapered down to zero last fall to fast on yom kippur, and then avoided caffeine until a month ago) or it can be a pot of tea every morning, give or take.

It can be-

In most cases, drinking caffeinated beverages is a relatively safe and non-harmful habit; however, when the need for caffeine crosses the line from a pleasant pick-me-up to a daily necessity, addiction is possible. The Controversy Surrounding Caffeine Addiction

Despite the similarities between caffeine dependency and other drug addictions, some health care officials debate as to whether it can qualify as an actual addiction. The main reason for this is that other addictive substances, such as amphetamines and cocaine, stimulate the area of the brain linked to reward and motivation to a higher extent than caffeine does. Caffeine causes a surge of dopamine within the brain but not a large enough surge to unbalance the reward system in the brain like other drugs. Because of this, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) does not currently identify caffeine addiction as a substance use disorder (SUD); however, it does recognize caffeine withdrawal as a clinical condition.

My caffeine is from iced tea or diet cola- and none after 2Pm. If I dont get any, I get a mild headache.

Well, sure, whether you define or as an addiction depends on what you consider an addiction. Most caffeine users consume it for years without it interfering with other activities, and few people feel a need to increase the dose. So if you consider it an addition, it’s a pretty harmless one.

If you really do hate it, you could be saving money in the years ahead:

My wife agrees with you. I don’t.
I believe in her case it has something to do with her gall bladder. She does not like dark chocolate either. But you are not alone.

No, you are not. Turkish (or Greek) coffee is the worst way to make coffee I know. Dusty bitter liquid. If you want to get into coffee my advice is to try another route.

Hmm, my mother in law would run into the basement with her Coke (the drink people) when the elders showed up. It’s the caffeine.

I agree with this. I like Turkish (or Arabic) coffee. But i think it’s an acquired taste. Coffee ice cream is the entry version of the drink. A nice coffee flavor devoid of bitterness, with the sweet cold rich pleasure of ice cream wrapped into the package. That was certainly my first coffee indulgence.

I like many bitter foods, though. I feel that some bitterness is a nice counterpart to other flavors. And I’d always loved the smell of my parents’ coffee. So it was easy for me to like coffee. Honestly, if you don’t like the smell, i don’t think you should bother trying any form of coffee. There are other ways to get caffeine, other hot drinks, and typically other social beverages available when coffee is served. What does coffee offer that’s worth getting past not liking the flavor?

actually, I remember Gevalia sending me free coffeepots/canisters just to try their coffee

Have you tried Whole Foods 365 coffee ice cream? They have frozen coffee chunks in it

Coffee tastes like roasted dirt. It smells like someone scooped the little tootsie rolls out of the cat litter box and brewed tea.

To wake up and smell the coffee is to wake up and throw the coffee maker, both the machine and the person who activated it, out of the house.

So you could say that I don’t care for coffee.

No. I don’t do well if i have a more is caffeine after noon, and i don’t generally eat ICE cream before noon. There are several traditional coffee ice creams that are low enough in caffeine that i can enjoy them. But whole foods doesn’t sound like it would be in my “okay” list.

Accurate description.

I’ve been drinking coffee for 45 years, but if it’s lacking milk and sugar, I’d prefer dirt.
