We’ve already determined that there’s no paper in the Star Trek universe, are the folks in the Star Wars universe the same kind of slackjawed drooling idiots that the Star Trek folks seem to be? I’ve seen all the films, but I can’t say for sure.
They have some sort of plastic-like paper called “flimsiplast”. I don’t know if special equipment is needed to “write” on flimsiplast, but I do know that no special equipment is needed to “read” something on it. (Of course, that might depend on what exactly is written on it.)
Anyhoo…
Maybe Lukes Uncle had some papers laying on his table when they were eating breakfast. Maybe Obi Wan had some papers lying around his cave-house. Other than that I doubt there would be much chance, I can’t remember. I’m only a marginal fan of the series and haven’t watched the movies in some time.
It is not uncommon for characters in the EU books to “scribble something on a nearby flimsi” (see: X-Wing: Iron Fist), so if you consider the EU to be canon, then yes, Star Wars does have paper.
“Flimsi” doesn’t strike me as very paper-like.
Didn’t Obi Wan say something like "You don’t need to see our papers. " to a couple of Stormtroopers?
And wasn’t half the set made out of paper mache?
That would be “You don’t need to see his identification”, not papers
I don’t know about Papier Mache, though
Well it WAS, then Lucas started smoking the funky stuff and then half teh set wasn’t even there
Why not? Paper seems pretty “flimsy” to me.
My guess is that it’s supposed to be some sort of synthetic organic fiber pounded into thin sheets- structurally identical to paper, but without the need for cutting down forests.
My guess would be that flimsi would be the response to a spaceborne society to the need to recycle. The flimsi would presumably be more easily and completely recyclable than paper – which is recyclable, of course, but it takes some doing which might be a hassle on a smaller ship. Now, a Star Destroyer, probably no problem. But a small flimsi recycling unit on something like the Millenium Falcon makes sense.
This ends today’s fanwankery. I hope.
I think “flimsi” is supposed to be some kind of plastic sheet or film. Presumably, it can be printed on or written on like paper, and I’d imagine that it would be easily recyclable and cheap to make.
Not true, I distinctly recall Picard handling a bound book with paper pages on at least one occasion.
Wasn’t the waitress-on-wheels (Flo) in the Diner on Coruscant taking orders on a standard paper order pad?
I suppose the refresher has sea shells?
I believe Picard has a modest collection of very old books, actually. That said, we’re talking about paper actually being used during Picard’s time, whether for printing new books, writing notes, making maps, etc.
Anyhoo…
I always assumed that flimsiplast was some kind of electronic newsprint type deal…
I’ve read articles about companies developing similar products…essentially a really thin, bendable LCD screen
I got that impression from the line in Paradise Snare in which Bria, I believe, “voids” a sheet of flimsiplast…
