Is there something like a scale of elder care, along with cost estimates?

Lets say you have an elderly person. I assume if there was a scale of how much caregiving it takes it would be something like this.

  1. Able to live independently or with a spouse. Cost $0

  2. Able to live independently, but needs a family member to assist. Cost $0 (except lost wages from the family member who is now a caregiver).

  3. Lives independently, but needs in home care. Cost $20/hr (whatever it costs for someone to come and help).

  4. Lives in assisted living. Cost $4000/month or so

  5. Lives in a nursing home. Cost $10,000 a month or so.

Is there an official scale of levels of independence among seniors with disabilities, with rough prices? Are there other options?

Thisis about 7 years old, but it’s a start.

We spoke w/ our investments guy about a year ago, about the possibility of longterm care insurance (we decided no.)

He was able to give us all manner of estimates as to potential costs in various situations, so the info obviously exists. Good luck finding it.

Does this change if you in fact ARE the elderly person?
