Is there such thing as a crazy dog lady?

You always hear about the crazy cat lady, but what about the crazy cat guy?
Or the crazy dog lady/guy?

Oh, yes, quite a few Crazy Dog Folks out there. The thing is, when you have a lot of dogs, the neighbors usually get up in arms a lot faster than if your house is full of cats, so the craziest dog horders are usually in very rural areas.

Well I mentioned in another crazy cat lady thread my mother’s ex boyfriend whose house was ruled by a pack (at least 6 but they were hard to count) of dobermans. He barely had any funiture because there wasn’t enough space what with the hoard running by every so often. And this was not a rural area, so they were mostly running by the furniture.

He also had a basement full of eight foot long snakes.

Mom know how to pick 'um.

How about bunnies:

Maybe she figured she could set the record faster w/rabbits.

Yes. She lives two buildings down the street. She has about 65 Yorkshire terriers and Tibetan terriers (okay, 6 in total, but the amount of noise can throw you off). She smells funny and doesn’t get out much socially.

My dog was staying at my place for the weekend a while back (she lives with my parents) and I got ambushed on a walk. I got talked at for most of an hour, but I didn’t hear much because the terriers yapped for most of that time.

I would guess that a large amount of dogs makes a lot more noise than a large amount of cats, so it would be less audibly noticeable for neighbors to hoard cats. Smell-wise, though, not so sure.

Yes. When I was first shopping for pugs, I inadvertently contacted a crazy lady dog-breeder. She had thirty-two pugs in her house, and advertised some dogs for sale, but when she got right down to discussing terms, she couldn’t bring herself to part with any of them. As we chatted further, it became more and more evident that she had mental problems, so I hurriedly excused myself and found a saner breeder.

I know one. She has like six little mixed breed dogs in a small house with a yard. She keeps taking in strays.

oh yes. Living in a rural area, we hear about animal control raids about once every few years. There was one in our area a few years ago that ended up with 65 dogs being confiscated from a home. (many of them ill and most of them with behavior problems.) The owners were definitely crazy. The descriptions of the home pretty much answered that question. To say the home was unsanitary would be a massive understatement.

Oh god yes. My GF works with a local dog rescue group and is surrounded by them. She only has two dogs herself (a pit/lab and a chiweenie), but is almost always fostering at least one more small one (right now there are two). This is in a 500-square-foot apartment in the middle of San Francisco, mind you.

While this may be mildly crazy, there are several people in the group that are far worse. Sometimes when my GF starts falling deeper into things, i have to take a step back and say, “woah look out. You’re starting to turn into such-and-such.” That usually brings her back to reality.

I think it’s harder to hoard dogs than cats, mostly because they require more space. Plus, when you factor in the dog shit landmine field that is your yard, you’re stinkin’ up the neighborhood and picking up dog shit on an almost full-time basis. With cats, a crazy person can slow the movement of the stench because it’s indoors for the most part.

Yes. I always tell my family that I aspire to be one when they ask if I aspire to have kids.

I think one can have just one or two dogs and be “crazy dog lady.” That’s my hope, at least - it’s all I can afford

Seriously, though…Dogs require more room than cats, too. Even little dogs. Cats will hang out on top of the fridge, on top of the drapes, inside a tissue box, under the porch, on top the cabinets, in your sock drawer, etc. Dogs get more confined to a single plane as they get bigger, and you’ll rarely see a dog able to hop on top the counters let alone the fridge.

I had a friend who’s sister lived in a little ranch in on 1/2 acre in the suburbs. She had EIGHT GREAT DANES. Eight. Those are Marmaduke dogs, for those who don’t know.

I think she and her family (oh yeah, husband and 2 kids lived there too) just sort of lived around the dogs.

Makes perfect sense to me.

Athena, pug owner.

Oh wait, I’ve got another one. With all the talk of dogs needing rural space. My friend and college roomate (who is ultimatly no crazier than you have to be to be sane) still had two Irish Wolfhounds (which is the same as 10 regular dogs, or the same as one small horse) in her NYC tiny apartment. Now, I can’t complain as one time I was staying at her place overnight and came home late and someone followed me up the stairs. And tried to push his way in. Only to be greeted by two Hounds From Hell. Ran like the pissant he was.

Thanks, Hounds. Thanks, roomate.

But it’s still a little nutty  .
