I have always thought the ‘not asking questions’ thing was generational more than sex-based. Boomers and their ilk don’t like to ask for fear of seeming intrusive. If I want you to know how my weekend was, I’ll tell you, and if you want to share you’ll tell me. Interactions are therefore a rally of back-and-forth statements
As a generation Y/millennial, I struggle with this. Spontaneously volunteering unrequested personal information feels weird…I much prefer the Q&A pattern of interaction.
I am a little more guarded when talking to younger female colleagues. This isn’t so much out of the fear of inadvertently sexually harassing someone as much as my not wanting her to think that I am chatting her up/being creepy.
