I’ve been noticing the unseasonably warm weather we’ve been getting. I live in northern Saskatchewan, and it’s -10 celcius here. I’m sorry, I don’t know what that is in Fahrenheir, but I know it’s way above zero. Anyway, I heard mention the name of el-nino on the radio the other night. I was half unconscious, so I wasn’t too sure what they were saying, but I think they were blaming the weather pattern for our warm weather.
So, is this el-nino? Anyone else be getting warm weather? I noticed a thread in the pit saying it’s 60 above in Denver.
Here in Edmonton, we’re in our fifth or sixth unseasonably warm winter. Edmonton hasn’t had a ‘brown Christmas’ in about 100 years, but two of the last three Christmases were brown. It’s -5C here today, which is very warm for this time of year.
My understanding of what happened is that the jet stream has shifted south and east, which has caused more extreme weather in the northeast U.S. and Southeast Canada, but has moderated temperates in the west. That, coupled with a strong el-nino in the past few years has warmed things up considerably.
I’m used to Edmonton going into a deep-freeze around November and not coming out of it until April. Temperatures usually average something like -15 to -20c, with long spells of -30 or colder. Much like Saskatchewan. But the last few years have been amazing. A couple of years ago we had a January where it was warmer than Florida several times. It got up to +16C in January that year (about 64 degrees F). There was still green grass at the start of December.
