Is this illegal??

A friend of mine who has been trying to get in contact with a debt collector, unsuccessfully, got word today from a Human Resources secretary that said:

Now, my friend has been calling these people, but ALWAYS gets a voicemailbox when he calls – I know, I’ve been around a lot of the times he’s called. My question from him isn’t about calling them back or getting in touch or whatever, it’s about them calling his work and leaving such a message with an HR secretary (instead of, even, calling HIM at work). IIRC, a debt collector leaving such information (that they’re calling from a debt collection agency) and such accusations (threatening legal action) to someone who ISN’T the debtee was illegal. Hence why most recorded messages are something to the tune of “Please call us back at 1-800-555-5555” and they never want to leave specific messages (I lived with my ex, who was in a similar situation, and often heard “Is Paul there? No? No, I can’t tell you anything, but have him please call this number.”).

Anyway, rambling aside, I told him I thought it was illegal for this company to leave such a message with a random HR secretary to pass on to him, and that I’d get the advice of the legal eagles on this board.

Gracias.

The question in this thread is almost identical to a question you asked three months ago, only then it was you and not “a friend” who had the problem.

And it’s remarkably similar to another question you asked last month.

Respondents in both those threads gave some quite specific advice, as well as pointing you to websites where you could find the information yourself. What more do you hope to gain by asking an almost identical question again?

Potential embarassment and having been unable to find the previous thread.

My apologies.
