Still, it’s nice of them to finally admit what we’ve been saying all along.
I was in the gym last night and the monitor over my treadmill was playing MTV-Japan when the following commercial came on:
A young guy is sitting on a sidewalk with a cardboard box full of records he’s selling on one side, and a toilet on the other. A pedestrian walks by, ignoring him. The young man then gets up, goes over to the toilet, drops his pants, and sits down for a few seconds (the volume was muted, so I don’t know if there were sounds effects). He then pulls up his pants, gets up, looks back at the toilet and lifts the seat.
He then reaches in and pulls out a double-handfull of shit, which the camera cuts to a close-up of. It looks, brown, soft, sticky and unmistakably shit-like (granted, its shape looks more like cow than human). He then slaps it down on the ground and starts kneading it with his hands (again, more close-ups). After shaping it into a flat patty, he then slams down a large press on top of it. When he lifts the press up again, the lump has been transformed into a vinyl record, with a bright red “M-TV” label on it. He then adds it to his box of records for sale.
Now, I don’t think I’m being overly cynical when the message I come away with is “M-TV: Yeah, it’s shit.”
Has this been running in other countries?
(p.s. this is mundane and pointless, but since it deals with music, MTV and commercials, I posted it in the Cafe)
It was at Tipness in Akasaka (the ones in Shibuya and Machida also have them). It’s pretty neat, they have a bank of muted TVs set to different channels, with headphone attachments for all the bikes and stair machines.
(I’m guessing MTV Asia and MTV Japan are two different but related entities.
MTV Asia comes out of Singapore and given the censorship rules locally they wouldn’t allow such artistic material to be broadcast)
(-ho hum, remind me to gripe about the censorship and bad editing of movies here -blah blah blah).
MTV India is also different, I don’t know if they’d be playing that…
So, no, I’ve not seen this ad on english or chinese MTV Asia. Has anyone else?
Just out of curiousity, was there a young lady whose name, if she used her real name, was given as Ann (or Anne, or some phonetic that’s ‘ann’) that spoke perfect english?
She would have been on sometime in the last 3-5 years.
'Light: I would figure the two being separate entities. MTV Asia tends to be quite generic, playing a lot of Ameri-English stuff, and a sampling of Bahasa Melayu/Indonesia and Philippino stuff too. The Chinese station tends to be HK, Taiwan and Singapore stuff (although the S’pore stuff is limited) and a fairly hefty does of J-pop.
MTV Japan wouldn’t need a focus that broad given the musical diversity originating inside Japan.
We also get ads for Channel [V], which no longer broadcasts in Singapore. I know not why.
