Choose Life. Although to be honest, isn’t every Wham! song screaming “this was made in the 80s” from fifty yards out?
Check it out, without music!
The first time I watched that video on MTV, my mum walked into the family room, looked at the TV, said, “Well, that’s surreal”, and walked back out.
To this day, I think of that video when anyone mentions surrealism.
I’m sad that we don’t have any of the videos with bright white lights and lots of blowing sheer fabric. And I can’t remember any.
“Total Eclipse of the Heart” fits that description.
The funny thing is if you just listen to the song w/o watching the video it’s not THAT 80s of a song. I mean, yes, it’s got the synth… but if you found out it was, say, 78 it would have just been “a little ahead of the curve”.
80sest song- I’ll cast in “We Built This City” for consideration. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1b8AhIsSYQ Pretty 80s vid too.
Well, despite the fact that Smapti won this thread way back at the beginning, and despite the fact that people have already mentioned both the clips I was thinking of already (that would be “Fade to Grey” and “AEIOU Sometimes Y”), I’ll still post a couple choices, for fun, if for nothing else.
When I think of the eighties, one of the first images that pops into my head is that of an Arnold-esque saxophone player (because I think it was a law in the eighties that if your song didn’t feature synths and LinnDrum beats, it better damn well have a sax featured prominently) dancing like he’s half his actual size, and absolutely no one is looking. In other words, Tim Cappello’s “I Still Believe”.
Another song (not so much the video, though it still most definitely has that typical eighties sheen) that exemplifies the typical mainstream rock sound of the era is Robert Tepper’s “No Easy Way Out”.
Some other good ones not already mentioned:
“All You Zombies”, by The Hooters
“Don’t Forget Me (When I’m Gone)”, by Glass Tiger
Billy Ocean’s “Loverboy”
And finally, maybe the eighties-est video ever (well, not counting that Michael Sembello monstrosity, naturally): “Hello”.
Why didn’t they just close this thread after this post? I mean… damn.
And “Dancing In the Streets” without music? fuuuuuuudge.
Mr. T - Treat Your Mother Right - YouTube Mr. T - Treat Your Mother Right is so 80s it practically laps itself as a parody of itself and doubles back again.
Where else but from Aldo Nova can you get special-forces operation musicians with mulletts, uzis, leopard-print unitards, girly tassle boots, and guitars that shoot laser beams!
I love Family Guys take on it. (Sorry. I couldn’t find a better video of it. )
Did I miss the post or did you guys forget about The Vapors?.
What? No Erasure yet!?
(Yes, I know it was almost mid-90's, but really, that video is all 80's and I've always thought of them as an 80's group.)For some reason I always associate Madonna’s “Borderline” with the start of 80’s music even though I know many 80’s songs predate it.
A glimpse into the trashy side 80’s style… Jane's Addiction - Been Caught Stealing (Official Music Video) | Warner Vault - YouTube
I don’t think I ever saw that video for Total Eclipse of the Heart. If I did, then maybe my subconscious blocked it out … that seemed to happen for a lot of the eighties. I may not have liked the song as much if I had seen that video. WTF is up with all the schoolboys? Maybe it’s a good thing that we didn’t have MTV for much of the 80’s?
I have a feeling I may end up watching all the linked vids and following the rabbit warrens that will come from clicking those links, so I think I need to pace myself.

Please.
Extra points for hints of paedophilia. Im sure these “hints” were not meant, but thats a vid that probably wouldn’t be made these days.

Kim Carnes, “Bette Davis Eyes”
I think I recall hearing a Bette Midler version of this with a bouncy rhythm that makes it sound like she’s making fun of the object of the song.
I can’t find it anywhere, and would like to, if it really exists.
Anybody have a link?
“Safety Dance”? It’s got Morris dancing. It’s got a maypole. It’s got a dwarf jester. It’s got a saucy wench in an almost-falling-off gown. It’s quintessential '80s all right… 1480’s.
