The funny thing is, it’s the RWNJs that are spouting whenever they get the chance that we are not a democracy, we are a republic (as if they know what any of that means). They keep saying that a democracy is a terrible idea, which is why you won’t find any democracies as a system of government in the world.
Of course, they refuse to understand the differences between the idea of a true democracy and that of a democratic form of government. Except, apparently, when they can use it to accuse their enemies.
No, there were primaries as long as I could remember. Just that in the past, without media interference- sometimes there wasnt a clear victor, so it was decided at the Convention.
I’m 71, and as far back as I can remember, there were some primary elections. Now, to be sure, they were only in a handful of states (maybe 15-20?), but there were always some primaries. IIRC, New Hampshire was always the first, just as it is today.
My summary: It looks like there have been primaries since the early 1900’s, but they had little to do with the selection of candidates until after WWII, were not a major factor until the 70’s, and their role in nomination was not codified until the mid 70’s.
“I keep hearing the suburban woman doesn’t like Trump. I think it’s a fake poll. Why wouldn’t they like me? I think they like me a lot”
“Dangerous to say these things. Maybe that’s why I get shot at… They’ll protect other people because they can’t believe they got so lucky”
“They lied last night about things nobody has ever seen”
“There’s been a report that the job numbers over the last period of time were fraudulent. I understand that because I know how the job numbers go. You want to be a bad person in high office, you can be a bad person but the numbers are going to be revised”
“You can’t walk across the street to get a loaf of bread, you get shot, and you get mugged, you get raped, whatever it may be. You’ve seen it. I’ve seen it”
“[The border wall] has a lot of technology, wires and things in it, for high technology”
For 30 years, due to being in a late-primary state my pres primary vote has mattered only once (in 2008) - there’s probably plenty of us who roll their eyes when Iowa, NH and SC don’t get their extra-special voice catered to for once.
