His campaign has been falling apart over the past month, and the GOP seems to be taking steps to stop him. What will happen at the convention?
It’s going to be YUUUGE! No wimpy speeches by politicians that nobody cares about! The stage will be reserved for WINNERS. Bush, Rubio, Cruz? They are LOSERS!
The convention will feature quarterbacks Tom Brady and Ben Roethlisberger; Brian France, the chief executive of Nascar; and Dana White, the president of Ultimate Fighting Championship.
It’s going to be an entertainment spectacular, with Trump himself giving a 45 minute speech every night, and everyone cheering and cheering and cheering for TRUMP!
Trump will be elected on the first ballot. There will be no noticeable challenge.
No matter how many times you ask about a brokered convention the answer will always the same: the candidates will be elected on the first ballot and the telecast will be an informercial.
The Grand Final Winners Night will be an amazing production, with FirstEnergy Stadium filled to capacity. 67,000 loyal Trump fans, who all will have paid at least $1000 each, just to be in attendance. There will be an actual NASCAR race during the crowning of Mr. Trump. Mr. Trump will give his best speech ever, about Build That Wall, and Hillary Is A Crook. There will be dancing girls, and lots and lots of WINNERS! It will be the Best Convention Ever.
This. The problem with any “dump Trump” plans is that if there was a viable candidate that was acceptable to most Republicans that guy would be the nominee already.
Yeah, but we’re talking about the Republican establishment here, not Republican voters.
No, we are talking about Republican delegates, a large chunk of whom are Ted Cruz loyalists.
I was thinking about rules changing. I mean, it’s most likely not going to happen, but all the barriers I remember hearing about are purely political, not practical or legal, so if they figured they were boned either way, I could see it being at least POSSIBLE.
Lots of things that are never going to happen are possible.
I think the collapse of his campaign has been oversold.
He is less down now than he was six weeks ago.
He is beating the Obama over Romney margin in both Ohio and Pennsylvania, essentially tied in both, despite his campaign’s recent fiascos and despite the fact that he has spent zilch in those states while Clinton has spent millions there and with his own party leaders distancing as best as they can.
What will happen at the convention is that he will become the official GOP nominee.
A few days later the Democratic convention will hit and Clinton will become the official Democratic nominee.
And then the race actually begins.
About 6 points down really is the baseline that we can expect he will bounce around and do not discount the possibility that he can have a good bounce at just the right time.
So you think his insistence that he really doesn’t need to have or spend any money to win is actually accurate?
I won’t fail to miss it. I’ll catch the attempted disTrumpification on news sites.
Leaper, No. But given that he is actually currently competitive (by the sparse polling so far done) in several swing states without spending a dime there, while Clinton spends millions, it may be that he can be competitive spending relatively less.
Will his ego force him to actually spend some of his own money (if he actually has any, especially liquid enough, to spend)? Maybe. And if he does put his own skin in the game then other money may yet follow.
Don’t get me wrong, I think the odds are strong that he will lose and likely fairly badly … but the odds (3 to 1 on most betting markets) are not high enough for my taste.
I don’t. And I’m damn sure he doesn’t, no matter what he’s currently saying in public.
Wow. I never thought I’d see THOSE words bumped up next to each other.
With acute intelligence and deft maneuvering, the Republicans can upgrade the situation from catastrophic to really, really bad. But with smart leadership and a sense of cooperation for the common good, Trump could be eased out. Or dragged. Whatever.
Then it will fall to the least offensive candidate, the one nobody much likes but is a safe pick not to talk about his dick in public. So, Romney.
I don’t see any way Trump is denied the nomination in Cleveland that doesn’t make the situation worse. Yeah, I know, the #NeverTrump people have made it clear they won’t give up but I don’t see anything that could result in Trump not winning the nomination.
If it could have been done, it already would have been done.
Given that Trump is enjoying record low support from Republican voters, I’m not sure how dumping him makes things worse. Seems like most of Trump’s support is from Republicans who aren’t loyal to the party to begin with. Is it more important to win over those new voters or keep the old ones?
He could be bought out. If there’s anything Trump loves nearly as much as himself, it’s money. I don’t know why they don’t have the Kochs sit him down, start writing the check, and ask him how big it has to be in order for him to drop out.
Unfortunately I watched Trump’s new attack on Hillary speech, which was more polished, read off of a teleprompter, so he didn’t fumble his words the way he does when he talks out of his head, Trump Slams Clinton as a 'World-Class Liar' - YouTube
If he keeps doing this he will make it to the convention, and I was sure he couldn’t win the election but am beginning to think he could. I’m very anti-Trump but becoming more and more anti-Hillary myself. If I list the things Trump has done that I find repulsive and list the things Hillary has done that I also find repulsive, they are almost tying, with Trump coming out slightly ahead.
