Sure. We obviously can’t deter them with prison time, since what they do usually kills them in the process.
Another good technique would be to go to their family’s house, escort them outside, and make them watch as their residence is set on fire. If loved ones will be harmed by their actions, maybe they’d think about it twice.
Well, I’ve always liked the tactic Vlad the Impaler used to keep the Muslim turks from advancing on his capital…
…but then again, impaling 50,000 POWs in a semicircle in front of an advancing army tends to deter pretty much ANY adversary, regardless of religious affiliation.
Or maybe not.
It is just as likely to enrage these people, so they become even more reckless.
Tomales, anyone?
It might not deter them, but it could inspire a new Food TV special.
Engaging in hate in response to hate is not a solution to hate.

Oh, that’s a great idea. What a way to convince moderate Muslims that a non-Muslim state can still respect their beliefs. What a way to get them on our side against the extremists.
Honestly I despair of people sometimes.
Aren’t these moderate Muslims the same ones who claim that these extremists are evil, acting against Islam, don’t truly represent Islamic values, etc.? Why would they mind if such terrible people (if they really think that) get buried in so disgraceful a way?
Could it be that they’re really much more concerned for their so-religionists than they are for their potential victims?
I can just see terrorists throwing down their arms in horror. Desecrating their dead bodies? Yeah, that’s guaranteed to end terrorism. It’s not like it would create more hatred and more martyrs, is it?
Also, Blalron - are you seriously suggesting we murder families of terrorists? You know, the women and children who haven’t done anything? Quite apart wondering why this wouldn’t create more hatred on the terrorists’ part, I’m wondering how anyone can think this a morally acceptable action.
the soviet union had many ways of convincing people not to mess with them.
i remember the use of pork products to gain information from people while alive.
they also used family members against those that attempted the kidnapping of soviet citizens.
i’ve thought that rather than the soviet way of using family members, one could do the following:
gather the women and young children of the terrorists, bring them to the us. put them through us schools and colleges, send them to disney world every five years.
i would think that getting “wish you were here” postcards from disney would inspire fear in the heart, esp. if there was an “it’s a small world” song chip.
The wisdom of this depends on whether the Chechen terrorists are motivated by hatred/anger or genuine religious extremism.
I rather the suspect the former under the guise of the latter.
In which case as other posters have pointed out it will only serve to inflame their hatred and aggression.
Captive: I’ll never tell!
Ivan: Don’t MAKE me use the sour-cream-and-salsa pork rinds!
Captive: Nooooooo!
Ivan: I could also slap you with a ham!
What istara said.
Anyone with a passing interest in the history of Chechnya might understand that a nation whose entire population was deported to Kazakhstan, in February 1944 by the order of Stalin, might be ever so slightly pissed off with the Russians.
A third of their number died en route of cold and hunger.
Of course, there are more recent examples of atrocities. Stalin’s is just the most outrageous, and the Chechens have long memories.
For heaven’s sake PRR, the Russians are mocking a belief which is a central tenet of Islam. It shouldn’t be that hard to understand why it would piss off other Muslims, irrespective of their views on the extremists’ brand of Islam.
No. I’m just advocating that we seize all their assets and destroy their homes.
Would this be fair? Hell No. Would it be a deterrant? Hell yes.
I don’t think it would be a deterrent. Would you stop fighting if you were convinced you were right and your opponent destroyed your home?
Didn’t Wildest Bill ask this right after September 11?
Do we really want to act like the Soviet Union?
First off.
Does anyone have a source other the link in the op where the Russians are actually doing this?
Second
If they are, it dosen’t seem to be working.
Then there is what Bill said
