Just wondering if it’s worth the price premium to order an iPod from Apple and have it laser-engraved for free, or to get it unadorned through Amazon?
In this case, the price difference is that Apple will hit me up for sales tax, but Amazon won’t.
I can see it being useful for identification - “This iPod belongs to gotpasswords” - in addition to the “Happy 15th Birthday!” sort of messages. But, since I’d be buying it for myself, it would be a little weird to write my own congratulatory note.
I got my first name and phone number in case it ever gets lost, although I doubt anyone would return a found iPod. There are probably some people who would.
I got my iPod just the other day through Apple. I got a student discount. Are you at university? Even with the cost of shipping at Apple, it was still cheaper to order it through Apple as opposed to Amazon.
Mine’s got a couple of scratches. Does that count?
Seriously, though, I don’t think they offered engraving back when I bought mine.
Too bad, 'cause I would have done it.
Mine was a gift, from my husband. It says " Graycat, for 25 great years, Love, Mouse."
It also has a tasteful decoration of scratches in multiple directions and depths, even atop one another. If I’d realized how easily that mirror finish scratched, I’d have gotten one of the sleeves for it. I never used the belt clip because I just stuffed it in my pocket.
Yep, mine was also an anniversary gift. “Happy 23rd Anniversary to my beloved TeaElle.” It helps my husband and I to know that we have our own iPod with just a glance, as his merely has his name.
You think I’m young enough to be in college? I’m flattered!
Ignoring the engraving, for me, the best price is at Amazon as they’re running a “spend $200, get a $50 credit for future purchase” type deal now. Plus, I get a 3% credit back with my Amazon credit card. So, $400 iPod ultimately costs $338. I do have an employee benefit program that gets a trivial discount at Apple, but it doesn’t even cover tax and shipping. If I really want to be impatient and wasteful, I can walk two blocks to the Apple store and get one right now for $433 - almost $100 more than Amazon and exercising patience for a few days while UPS gets it to me.
Mainly, I was just wondering if there’s any particular benefit in having one engraved. Putting “Help! I’m lost!” probably wouldn’t be of any use in getting it back to me if lost or stolen unless the finder is abnormally honest.
