Seems to me I’ve run into this before – a little toggle icon bugger that got clicked on by accident and turned off my sound. Now it’s happened again. It seems all the wires are connected properly, and it was playing music okay the other day . . . Can anyone help?
If you are in windows, look for a small speaker icon in the lower right corner. It’s easy to miss-click it is you are trying to view the calendar.

Also, in my experience, at least some laptops have a function key combination you can press to mute/unmute the speaker, which accomplishes the same thing.

Newer keyboards have speaker controls as well. The one that came with my HP has mute/unmute and volume controls above the numeric keypad.
I think there are also keyboard applets that will let you assign a key combo to mute, unmute, volume etc. even if it’s not a “media” keyboard.
You create a shortcut of “Sounds and Audio Devices” (from the Control Panel) on the Desktop.
I have a rotary volume button on my speakers.
Rotary volume buttons are amazing. State of the art – they weren’t invented until, I think, 1922. I can find it by feel, and give an analog turn. Instead of stopping what I am doing, visually locating a sound icon, moving the mouse pointer to it, either right or left clicking (I can’t remember which), visually locating a slider, positioning the mouse pointer on it, and moving it a specified number of millimeters.
Or finding the TV remote between the cushions, holding it where there is a light source, locating the sound button, and holding it down while waiting a moment of lag time for a tiny motor to turn the sound up or down to the desired level, and with split second timing remove my thumb from the button near the desired volume, then correcting for error…
