It doesn't matter if it's fuzzy!

I thought I was done with it all! Weeks of work into these college applications and today was the day it was going into the mail. But no, it was not to be. My parents saw the applications and wanted me to redo them. Every single page. Why? Because they were blurry coming out of the computer. It’s readable I say. Too bad. Their word is law.

The admissions officers are not that freaking superficial. Oh no, it’s kinda fuzzy, but they can read it. Everything is recognizable. If they want to reject me because the black blobs of ink don’t conform up to their standards, then reject me! I don’t want to go that school then. Sigh…I’m already sick of college and I’m still in high school.

So here I am, stuck during my winter break, redoing my applications in a higher resolution in Adobe Photoshop. Originally, I thought typing out the applications on the computer would save me time but I guess not. I’ve been itching to get outside for a week now after getting my wisdom teeth popped out. Nah, one more day stuck doing college crap because their word is law.

I know my problems are insignificant to some of the stuff adults face so feel free to roll your eyes.

Why are you using Photoshop for this document?

The applications come in .pdf files that are uneditable but I can pop them into Photoshop to work on.

So he can set trapping at .08 to avoid bleed caused by paper stretching on high speed offset printers. Must be making a few thousand copies.

Seriously, Photoshop?

And FTR, sloppy work vs being neat can affect how far you go in life. Not just on applications, but it’s a good place to start.

ah… .pdf …no rolleyes… understand now I do

If you have PhotoShop, save the PDF files as jpgs. Place the images in a text editor and just put text boxes in the appropriate places.

Or buy the full version of Acrobat, which allows you to edit PDFs.

www.ghostscript.com

With Ghostscript and GSView, one can edit and manipulate .PDF files, with some exceptions.

Give it a whirl, and put Photoshop away!

Hey, if it’s any comfort, my mom insisted on buying green-tinted white-out to match the application form. We still have an almost-full bottle of completely useless green-tinted white-out ten years later.

I remember how much of a pain in the butt applications were last year. Just to warn you, if your parents are making less money this year than they did last year, you’re likely to get screwed out of a bit of financial aid. I had to have mine recalculated by the school because there was a BIG difference in what FAFSA thought my mother was making than what she actually made this year.

Good luck.

(I just couldn’t resist… )

Your parents are right. A blurry application gives the message that you are lazy and careless.

Are you sure enough of this to risk your future?

Well, don’t you wish you were so old that you did applications in longhand?

AND kill your own goat to get the necessary vellum.

OK - not the second bit.

Good luck with it all.

PDF

The vast majority of people have no ability to edit PDF documents, I honestly think they want you to print it then write or type your answers in.

Who sends out documents in PDF if you’re expected to edit them electroncially?

All my applications last year were online and it gives me a warm tingly feeling inside.

Personally, I think your parents are right. I had a boss last summer who didn’t even look at someone’s resume (when she was hiring) because they faxed it in twice. So you never know how stupid people can be.

It matters. Trust us.

Where are you applying? All my applications were in by the beginning of October. I wasn’t taking any chances–I wanted to be accepted by Thanksgiving, and I was, and it’s very comforting.

Congrats, AwSnappity. Can I ask where? Your wait’s over, but mine’s just starting. When the decisions come in March/April I’ll be so relieved. Waiting sucks! Are there any high school dopers applying to college? We can all hold hands and hope for a fat envelope

Anyways, I sent out applications to University of California @ Berkeley/Davis/Los Angeles/and San Diego, Cornell, Johns Hopkins, Rice, and Stanford.
