I was online in another room. Our Lab cross came up and barked in my ear. He had never done this before so I looked into it. My daughter was having a seizure. The Little Girls were barking at her, but he had taken the initiative to tell me.
None yet cue in on the precursors, which could help her be more independent, but it was a start.
I hope it works out that the dog can give you/her warning - that would be so awesome for her!
That is so cool, dropzone! I’m very glad your dog let you know, so you could be there for your daughter.
One of our cats, Todd, wakes me up when I ‘go low’ during the night. I’m diabetic, and insulin dependent. Sometimes, I have a low during the night, when I’m sleeping. I’m usually hypo-aware, but apparently not aware enough to wake up when I have a low. I try to be careful, and do my best to avoid it, but, sometimes it happens. Todd will meow at me, and walk all over me, until I get my ass up out of bed. It must be the shaking that tips her off that I’m going low. Or maybe she can just sense it, somehow. Hard telling. It sure wasn’t anything she was ever trained to do, that’s for sure!
Todd is a stray that my husband took in. She prefers to spend her time in the bedroom, for some reason. She’s a wonderful little girl, and I probably wouldn’t be here without her!
You need to get with one of the specialized dog trainers to figure out what she is cueing on, and get it trained up and recognized, and get her/him/it certified as a service dog. That way if you go on trips you can take the pup with you legally. Get the pup one of the service dog vests as well.
A seizure dog isn’t much good if they aren’t with the person that has health problems after all =)
That’s a good idea, but he’s not that good with people. Maybe when the Little Girls get better at it we could do it. They are brown and black Shih Tzu/Westies and would look SO CUTE in their little service dog vests!
ETA: They are sisters and go everywhere together.
