UNC, which has a predominately Native American student body, has christened its basketball team “The Fighting Whities.”
This is the funniest damn thing I’ve seen in a long time…
“Every thang’s gonna be all white!”

That’s what I was thinking. Fighting Whities sounds a vicious pair of BVDs.

I understand perfectly why the team chose the name and what they HOPE to accomplish. The problem is, it isn’t going to work!
Obviously, they’re HOPING that, once the shoe is on the other foot, white Americans will become outraged and offended. Then, the white folks will finally understand how insulting names like “Washington Redskins” and “Atlanta Braves” are. At that point, in theory, white folks will push for the abolition of those names.
Unfortunately for them, I don’t know any white people who are going to be outraged! No white people are going to feel insulted, just as no Irish-Americans are outraged by the Notre Dame “fighting Irish” logo or the name “Boston Celtics.”
My hunch? The fighting Whities will quickly discover that their name isn’t offending or getting a rise out of anybody, and they’ll go back to their old name (or a new one) next season.
It’s ONLY an intramural team, and I think it’s being blown a little out of proportion.
Not that I’m bitter I won’t find one of those shirts on eBay now… 
I think it’s an hilarious name. I understand the sentiment of it, but it just isn’t offensive. To me, anyway.
