Italy will require vaccination proof for cafes, taxis, etc

Do Dopers think European policies requiring proof of vaccination to enjoy daily activities - restaurants, bars, etc. are sensible? Possible in the US? Balance individual and community rights?

Given how easy it is to get a vaccine, and how effective they are, this is entirely reasonable, whether mandated by the government or by individual businesses.

Yes it is right and proper. Vaccination is too important.

I endorse this whole heartedly for Ontario.

The people not getting vaccinated are the cause of the 4th wave and are the ones most likely to drag us into more lockdowns.

I don’t believe we can block all activities for the unvaccinated, but going to gyms, theatres, concerts, restaurants, etc. should be reserved for people that are fully vaccinated or medically unable to receive a vaccination. I don’t mind Quebec’s approach where this will only be used as an alternative to lockdowns when the situation starts to get bad.

Yes, I believe it’s reasonable. There’s an old saying which says “Your right to swing your fist ends where my nose begins.” In the times of a pandemic, this could easily be “Your right to spread COVID-19 ends where my nose begins.”

The health pass is not just for vaccination:

The Italian health pass is issued to all those who have been administered at least a dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, to the ones who have recently recovered from the disease, or to those who present a negative test taken within 48 hours.

In Switzerland it is required to show proof of vaccination or recovery or negative test result for going to clubs. The clubs want the government to pay for the testing so that the clubs and the clubbers don’t have to bear the extra costs. I do not agree.

This sounds a lot like what was attempted, and failed, in the Netherlands in the beginning of July. People were allowed into venues like clubs, concert halls, festivals etc provided they had a recent (72 hours) negative test result or a proof of vaccination (as shown by a government-sponsored smartphone app). A large surge of COVID infections resulted. Then the venues were close again, and the infection rate went down again later that month.

Yes, it’s sensible and possible, and it’ll give some cover to individual businesses that want to do it now but fear a backlash against their business or confrontation between their employees and your usual asshole in the general public.

Yes, I think it’s sensible. Given another recent thread about vaccone passports, it’s my understanding that this may be complicated to action in the US as, putting aside the political fall-out, there isn’t a centralised database of vaccination records.

I have a ‘Covid pass’ on my phone, curtesy of my NHS app, which shows my vaccination record.

NYC is going to start requiring it as well – either use the NY State Excelsior app, a coming NYC app, or bring your card, if you want to dine or go to the gym indoors.

I wish Pennsylvania would do the same.

Yes I think it is perfectly reasonable for businesses to put such restrictions in place.
I was under such restrictions when attending The Open a few weeks ago and that all worked well.
I think it’ll work as a good incentive to get as many vaccinated as possible.
