Big ol’ fat flakes falling from the sky. And as depressing as it is going to work when it’s dim and leaving it when it’s dark, I can’t freaking wait for that ski area to open in 3 weeks. Thank ba’al for night trails. Open 'til 9!
We had scudding snow today–the ground has traces of white on it for the first time. I figure it’s only a matter of weeks before we get a good solid blanket.
Also, I still can’t feel my nose and I was out an hour ago.
It’s been snowing since about 1AM this morning. In 14 hours, we have nearly a meter of snow. The trees have huge piles on top of them, and the pond out back is largely frozen over. You would never know that it was all clear just one day ago.
It was snowing today… er… It’s 1AM now so I guess it was technically yesterday.
Powdery bleh stuff that is just a dusting and won’t stick long, but we’ve been spoiled by warm weather this fall so far and it’s been cold today/yesterday and I hate it. Blegh.
Bell do you mind getting a bit more specific as to where you are? If you don’t want to identify yourself any more then don’t worry!
Here in Hokkaido (the southern-ish bit) it hasn’t snowed yet today despite all the forecasts predicting it. It’s bloody cold though and apparently in Niseko it’s really snowy and the ski hills are opening.
Oddly enough a friend in Fukuoka (very south of Japan!) said they had some flakes of snow today - before us up here!
First snow was a few weeks ago but it didn’t last long.
I love skiing but I hate snow shovelling, window scraping, duck walking on the ice… kitting kids up every morning… Yuck for the next five months.
I’m in western Aomori. From what I understand Aomori-shi didn’t get a damn flake of snow, nor the did western coast. The eastern coast of course never really gets much compared to us. It’s weird, I ended up in a small pocket where it was snowing pretty much only on top of me.
Supposed to snow more tomorrow, then turn into rain after that, so I’m assuming a large chunk of it will disappear before the perma-blanket settles for the season. Still, it was a hell of a first snow (well, first if you don’t count the mountains, which have had snow for a couple weeks).
Isn’t this month’s basho in Fukuoka? Dunno if you follow sumo, but from the outside shots I saw today it didn’t look like much was falling there. That’s pretty strange, though!
Oh, and Caractacus Pott is apparently making it to Hokkaido somewhere around xmas. I missed the Sapporo Snow Festival last year and I’m planning on going this year (haven’t figure out exact dates yet though). Mini dopefest?
No snow here in Gunma prefecture although it was damn cold today and feels like it could start any second… and I still haven’t got my trusty “silent but deadly” kerosene heater out of storage though–forging on with my kotatsu! My friends are all excited about the snowboarding season but I am dreading it… yuck, snowboarding. Not my idea of a good time. Luckily I live just 3 hours from Tokyo.
See if you can get him to stay for more than dinner. He trekked hours on the Shinkansen once to Tokyo and left after the meal! All of our plans to wheedle embarrassing stories out of him were foiled in one fell blow.
Pah, is swimming season over with a surfboard and a 3-2mm wetsuit? You Okinawa peeps don’t know how good you’ve got it. Oh well. I might have shitty waves but at least I get to both surf and snowboard a half hour from my house.
We were supposed to get sleet and/or snow last night. The first cloudless night we’ve had in ages. With the icy cold, the morning air was clear. I got some good shots of our village from a distance. It, again, is clear and cold tonight.
Cerowyn, I’ll be in Japan for almost 10 days starting December 23. I get off the plane at Narita then 7 or 8 hours on trains to Hakodate. No use wasting time. Unless things change, I head to the hotel in Yokohama December 26. I’ll move to Narita City January 1 then fly out January 3.
It’s one of those things: when I lived in Japan, I could only squeeze in trips to Tokyo on the weekend. Now that I live on the other side of the world, I can loll around for two weeks. PM me if you want me to bring anything from England. BRBS-CS, the Cadbury lady says the eggs should be available before Christmas but doesn’t have a date. Yet. Dammit! I want to make that trip to Birmingham. Also, in another thread you wished for something American for Christmas. Remind me in a PM. We may be able to work something out.
I was three years old, living in Japan, when I saw my first snowfall. My parents woke me and my sister up at O-dark-thirty and opened the big wooden shutters in our room and turned on the outside light.
Later my mom and I built a little snowman. But we didn’t have any coal for eyes, so we just made the holes.
We’ve had some fearsome snow the last few days. Its now near impossible to get in and out of my car park as the tyres cannot grip the road enough. We’ve had chavs throwing snow balls which is a real shame - it put a real downer on a beautiful winter scene. It doesnt look like its going to clear up anytime soon.
Amazingly, we’ve had sleet/snow flurries this morning in the Highlands south-west of Sydney. At 7.00am the temperature was only 3C. The air pressure has fallen to the lowest I’ve ever seen, below the minimum marked on the barometer (980 hPa). And it’s only a month before Christmas, when we’re normally into shorts and T shirts! Very unseasonal!
