Its a Columbia, MO dopefest, and you're invited!

In this thread, we discussed having a Dopefest at my groovy 70’s pad in Ashland, MO (15 minutes south of Columbia). Those who’ve expressed interest include such Doper superstars as auntie em, Mirror Image egamI rorriM (if she can get a ride and come up with a good story  ), misstee, SkipMagic, wikkit, withaK. I must say, if you live anywhere in Missouri, western Illinois or eastern Kansas, you’re a wimp if you don’t come. Misstee, Wikkit and withaK are from somewhere in Iowa, which is a long damn way from Columbia, and they’re coming. So there. :stuck_out_tongue:

The scenic Columbia, Missouri is located smack dab in the middle of the state, between St. Louis and Kansas City, Rolla and Kirksville. Come see the lovely harvest gold, triangular paterned carpet and the harvest gold velvet drapes in the living & dining rooms of this shrine to the 70’s, the stone fireplaces, the red carpet in the rec room. Truly a wonder to behold. You’ll feel as if your hanging out with the Brady Bunch! And who can resist that?

I suggest we get together sometime in September - who wants to pick the date? (I’d prefer a Saturday, but am open to other suggestions.) Also, suggestions on what we should bring/do? How 'bout we barbeque? If we do that, we’ll need a volunteer barbeque human, cuz I dunno how to run the thing and I don’t want to know… I will, however, provide the meat, charcoal and other barbeque stuff. Just not the labor.

I have a pool table (someday I’ll have a pool, too, but no splashdope this year :frowning: ), a dartboard, and a big backyard, so there’s plenty of built in stuff to do and plenty of room to play. (I don’t have much outdoor seating, though, so please bring lawn chairs if you have them.) I also have real bathrooms, so no one will have to endure a ‘bestiality-inclined merman’ watching them pee. If you want someone to watch you pee, then you may take Jasper the cat into the bathroom with you and he will watch you pee.

To wrap up, when do you want to get together? Who’s coming? What do you want to do? Who will be the barbequer? Who will bring the ‘Kiss the Cook’ apron for the barbequer to wear? (I will kiss the cook. There’s incentive for you to volunteer right there.)

I’m in, but don’t make it Sept. 13–that’s the day of that party I’m throwing for my mother’s friends because she (my mother, that is) wants me to get presents.

And might I suggest having it on a Saturday? I think Columbia’s a pretty cute little town, and that way people coming from afar could make a weekend of it, stay overnight so they don’t spend more time driving than they do having fun in the area.

Depending on how many overnighters we have, I have room for some to stay with me. I’ve already offered beds to my 3 Iowan pals, but have room for a few more if need be.

I’ve been checking out hotels and it seems that a lot of them are booked up for the weekend of the 20th. Is there something going on that weekend?

And do you have a hotel recommendation?

(If we have it after the weekend of the 13th, the party will have happened, and perhaps Skip and I will be loaded enough to splurge a little.)

Cool! I’m in! I don’t think anyone wants me to grill, though, because a lot of grilling depends on telling what color the meat is. Me, I can’t actually tell most of those color changes (unless it goes straight to black–in which case… it’s done!) so unless you want to gamble with your life, I probably shouldn’t be voted as “Most Likely to Be Kissed By a Grateful sperfur.”

Unless, of course, it’s for other reasons.

I’ll also drive someone down (and back up if you’re nice), but in the case of those Dopers who are not quite yet of the age of majority (“This is the dawning of the Age of Majority/The Age of Majority”), said Doper’s parents must know what’s going on. And for no reason other than a story falling apart could send said parents into a frenzy, the police into a manhunt mode, and stodgy old SkipMagic into jail.

But that’s just me. I get paranoid about stuff like that.

I’ll be sure to bring my lethal billiards weapon, StickBOB. He helps me win every single time. Usually because I threaten to run the other person through with StickBOB unless I win.

I searched the event calendar at columbiamo.com and didn’t see anything going on in Columbia that weekend. Doesn’t mean there isn’t, though.

Nicer hotels include (all 573 area code):

Drury Inn - 445-1800
Fairfield Inn - 814-2727
Holiday Inn Executive Center - 445-8531
Ramada Inn - 449-0051 or 800-228-2828

The ones I’ve listed are all nice as well as easy to find - right off the highway. All the ones listed under ‘hotels’ in my paper phone book are decent places. Some of the ones listed under ‘motels’, however…

There are several nice new hotels where I-70 and I-63 cross that I’m not seeing in the phone book. Some of those would be on I-70 Drive SE - I’m headed in that direction in a few minutes, I’ll see if I can figure out what they’re called and how to get in touch with them.

I have to agree with auntie em the 13th wont work for me, but the 20th would work out. I will ask withaK if he has a drill scheduled for that weekend.
Also, Wikkit what is your availability, huh ?

I have a ton of family in Kirksville so if we wanted to we could also stay over night there. I haven’t been to Columbia in 6 years or so, but I know how to get there.

If any other Iowans would like to go I am sure we can find room for a couple more or so. I can bring food as well. I do better with side dishes that can be thrown in a cooler than cookies:)
I will check this thread every so often so I can keep up with it.

Okay, I’ve done some footwork and found out that September 20th is Mizzou Parent’s Weekend. New freshman invite their parents up to watch the football game - so that means its also football weekend. :frowning:

There are some hotels that have vacancies on the 20th, but all the ones I went to have vacancies on the 27th. I’ll post the rates and contact info below.

While I was out and about, I obtained a hide-a-bed couch, so it looks like I now will have 2 empty beds (in addition to the 3 I’ve offered to misstee, wikkit and withaK) on the 20th or 27th. This hide-a-bed couch will also be given away as a door prize on Sunday morning, so bring a truck. If those fill up, I have couches, love seats, recliners, and lots and lots of floor - so if you want to stay over, just let me know. We’ll have a Dopeslumber Party!

Hotel rates:

Holiday Inn Express - 449-4422
9/20 - Booked up
9/27 - $83 for 2 queen size beds, all rooms have microwaves and other goodies

Hawthorn Suites - 800-527-1133
9/20 - Booked up
9/27 - $95 basic room, $115-$120 for larger room with kitchen and living room

Wingate Inn - 817-0500
9/20 - Booked up
9/27 - $89 king or 2 doubles, $109-$119 suite

Candlewood Suites - 817-0525
20th - $129-$149 suite
27th - $79-$99 suite

Best Western - 800-362-3185
20th - Booked up
27th - $72 regular room, $135 suite

Howard Johnson Express - 800-446-4656
20th - $89 2 queens or 1 king
27th - $75 2 queens or 1 king

All of the above are on the southeast side of the intersection where I-70 and I-63 cross. Very convenient, as you have to take get off I-70 and take I-63 south right there to get to my house.

I have to agree with auntie em the 13th wont work for me, but the 20th would work out. I will ask withaK if he has a drill scheduled for that weekend.

I’m not the type to schedule things that far ahead of time for myself, so I’ll be fine with any of those weekends. Avoiding crowds of football people would be good, but I don’t know how much contact we’d be having with them if we’re hanging 'round Jasper Castle. Would they be as stupid-funny as the crowd last weekend?

I like to grill. I’m sure there will be other grill-inclined folks as well.

“Missing Teenage Girl Found at Dope Gathering with Man She Met on Internet.” Come on, Skip, think of the publicity we’d have for the next one with a headline like that.

He he he. I think we have a vic…I mean, volunteer to man the barbeque grill.

Unless you want to do tourist stuff in Columbia, the football crowds won’t bother us at all. If you want to check out downtown and stuff like that, you will be disappointed by all the nutjobs that come out on football weekend.

I was in Columbia back in the mid-80’s to work on the Midwest Radio Theater Workshop at KOPN radio.

Do they still do that?

/hijack

I just have one question…

Where the hell where you people when I tried to get interest going in a St Louis DopeFest?! It’s blatant discrimination, that’s what it is! You’re a bunch of anti-amphibites.

Really, what is it? Do I smell bad? Are you all intimidated by my… um… hell I can’t even think of anything about me that would intimidate anything, so that can’t be why. Columbia. Feh. I wouldn’t be there if it were the last DopeFest ever and Charlize Theron was offering me blowjobs if I showed.*

*(Ok, yeah, I’ll try to make it. Doesn’t really matter what weekend, since I don’t know what days I’m working from week-to-week anyway)

I’m a Doper superstar! Cool.

I probably could not make it Columbia, actually, on account of:

A: Not having a driver’s license
B: Not having a reliable car
C: Not having the money to stay at a motel
D: Not having the balls to tell my parents I want to go and hang out with people I met online.

So…um, yeah. I’ll be there in spirit.

Where was I? In a coma.

By the time I found out about the proposed St. Louis dopefest, the thread had already died. I would have missed the KC dopefest thread, if I hadn’t caught the tail-end of the missing co-worker thread.

I still will go to one if you have it in St. Louis.

I’ll also try to contact some of the other Dopers in the area I keep in touch with and see if I can’t drag them along with me.

So is the 20th set, or are we still at just sometime around the 20th?

Hey, having a ghost hanging around would be good publicity too.

Crunchy, from here it’s 455 miles to St. Louis. It’s only 358 to Chicago, which already has a big dope fest. Columbia is 347, and KC was 227.

But mostly, it’s because sperfur was at KC, and said “Come to Columbia”. You’re welcome to come to Columbia and say “Come to Saint Louis”. I’d love to rent a set of those suction glass clamps and try to climb the Arch.

Come to Columbia, cooooommmmmee to Columbia…

I’ll stand under you with one of those big trampolines in case you fall. That will get us some publicity.

Me climbing the Arch, or falling through a trampoline at 300 MPH?
