The good news is that security software is included with Windows 10, so you’re not completely unprotected. (Earlier versions as well, btw) One of MS big goals in moving people up the OS chain is getting more people protected. I can explain that in excruciating detail if anyone really wants to know…
The less-than-good news is that most people consider the security barely adequate, if not plain old bad. Sort of like the tarp in the movie Martian. There is software out there that will do a much better job of cleaning and protecting your system.
It’s probably worth upgrading to a paid suite, if you rely on your computer for work or anything important (other than us of course!)

A message saying you have malware is almost certainly malware trying to sell you a “fix” for $39.95.
If you don’t already have active and up to date antivirus/malware protection, head over to http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ for a free scan. They also have a free anti-ransomware tool. Trend Micro is a good company - last I knew, we use their products to protect our Exchange servers.
