Hell, if you want to get down to it, nothing that trump does can actually violate the 1st, as he’s not congress, and the 1st actually only limits what powers congress has over speech, not the executive branch.
Is he violating the 1st, no, he is not, and I never said that he was.
Are his actions demonstrating that he has no respect for it, and that he sees it as an inconvenience, and really just a way for nasty people to criticize him, IMHO, yes.
It’s bullshit to say that the NFL isn’t already political.
How can ya’ll seriously claim that football fans don’t want no politics when this kind of stuff is so commonplace.
Conservatives must think “politics = things I don’t agree with”. No. All that flag-worshipping, military cocksucking shit that makes the Right feel good is straight-up political pandering, too.
But we all know Trump is a grudge-holder and I think he’s reacting so crazily because of that thing that happened with the NFL back in the '80’s … when he owned a third rate football team in a second rate league and he decided he was going to take on the NFL to force a merger by suing them under anti-trust laws. He “won” the lawsuit but only got $3 and his moves drove the USFL and Trumps team out of business. He’s probably hated the NFL ever since and those old hurts are itching at his thin orange skin.
It’s illegal for the President to say some things. 18 U.S. Code § 227 gives a list of public officials who cannot legally attempt to influence employment decisions by private companies for political reasons. The President, not surprisingly, is one of the positions on the list.
bill - a few genuine questions. I get that you hate sports and everything you’ve said so far. But I would like to know your views in whether you think children in school should be compelled to give the pledge of allegiance? It’s a different situation than what is going on in the NFL, but I’d like to your your views.
Also, it seems to me that Trump himself took a situation in which a handful of football players carried out a protest that cracked page one on papers maybe a couple times, and this week threw gasoline and a nuclear bomb on what was barely a brushfire and turned it into a major issue today.
It seems to me that if you want to stop a brushfire, deprive it of fuel. Without fuel, the small number of protests in the NFL probably would fizzle out over time. But if someone’s goal is to keep politics out of sports, anyone who knows anything about anything would tell you to not say things to inject MORE politics into sports.
So do you agree or disagree with my opinion that Trump is the whole reason why we are taking about this today? Why or why not?
I like football as much as the next guy, but this is purely domestic entertainment. It’s not some international event like the Olympics, so what the hell do we even need to play the National Anthem for? We don’t play the national anthem before The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, do we?
Sorry if you took it personally. I was just honestly responding.
But IMO if respecting something that IMO represents what is the best about us upsets you…well, that’s going to bother me a bit (barring well thought out actions that would bother me but might not once I understood them).
And lighten up.
I didn’t lump you /them with the rapists and pedophiles…sorry it it came off too strong.
There are countries in the world where people can be coerced to behave patriotically, and punished for not doing so. I don’t think any of you want to live in any of the countries on that list. Being on that list would not put America in very respectable company.
