It's a Small (Online) World

I’ve been doing the online dating thing for over a year, but have mostly just used OKCupid and Match. Over the weekend I decided that it might be time to try Yahoo Personals, so I posted a profile & pics: the very next day someone sent me an “icebreaker,” and it’s a guy I knew from another message board 3-4 years ago! I even met him once, at that site’s equivalent of a DopeFest. I have no idea whether he recognized me when he sent the message, but I recognized him almost right away. Yahoo now uses first names instead of “handles,” and he has an unusual first name – that plus his profession and main interest (both mentioned in his profile) were dead giveaways.

I’m not interested at all – not only does he live too far away, I didn’t like him back then and in fact we had a kind of “fight” on that board – but it just struck me as funny that my first response was from someone I sorta used to know online.

And THEN, I just checked my personals mailbox again and there’s a message from someone I used to work with! He’s not interested (which is good because neither am I), he’s just saying hi. And his subject line is “small world.”

Small world, indeed!

My step-sister signed up for a site I was a member of and I was the first “match” that came up after she filled out all her info. Neither of us knew that the other was a member until that point. I just laughed.
