It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...

Hey! That’s MY barbecue grill! Looks just like it, snow and all.

(My son is in the back yard making snow tunnels with the cat. Boy and cat both having a fine time.)

I’m just wondering when they’ll reopen the malls. I’ve got shopping to do!

Hmm this is kind of wierd. It’s the first time the place where I lived didn’t get a freaky hard hit by the blizzard. Kind of disappointing really, I’ve come to expect it, and plan for it.

In 82, we had a 15 foot drift over the house, and were stuck in for two weeks.

In 97 I got hit by 6 feet and my car was totally buried.

In 2003 I got 7-10 foot drifts and my truck was buried enough I had to find it by braile. It took me 4 days to dig out enough to to get to the road(which was melted clean by then)

But this time, really nothing. (Alameda and Havana). A little string of 2 1/2 foot drifts blown by the wind. Other than that maybe an average of 6-8 inchs. The parking lot is already clear, and nearly back to business as usual.

I’d be very surprised. In my travels around the metro area yesterday, I didn’t see any 4wd or awd vehicles stuck in the snow. They were all dumbasses who decided to drive their normal cars in the snow. Of the three people I helped push, One was a Cadillac CTS-V (RWD, 400hp, summer tires) and one was a Hyundai Elantra (FWD, bald all-seasons). The AWD and 4WD people were not having any trouble. It’s always the people who cars completely unsuited to the conditions who get stuck.

As for myself, it took me less than a minute to get going this morning, and that’s with no digging out. 2005 Infiniti FX35, ATESSA-ETS AWD system, Blizzak tires.

 I was at Infiniti of Denver yesterday just south of there, and there was already probably 8" by 11 am…

The wind must have helped you out. All your snow is sitting on someone else’s car this time.

Well, I’m moving. All the office will say about plowing is, “We don’t have control over that,” and, “Nobody here has control over that.” I’m thinking they didn’t even hire one for this season. This is not the first completely bone-headed incompetent stunt they’ve pulled, but it’s the last for me.

Would you give me a ride to work tomorrow?

I don’t know how we managed to score this, but my neighbohood had a full-sized front end loader clearing the street for about three hours this afternoon. Maybe it’s because we have a City Council member on the block.

The street is pretty much clear, at least a ten foot swath down the middle of it. I just need to clear a path from my driveway to the plowed lane.

I’m listening to the Mayor of Denver on the radio right now - he’s doing everything he can, but I sure am glad I’m not him right now. Shutting down the airport for two and a half days four days before Christmas! It’s gonna take a couple of days to clear out the backlog of flights in and out.

Hehe, I win!
I pulled out 12 people so far today. Including three would-be puller-outers, who got their dumbass stuck in their new model SUVs while trying. I almost got cocky and tried a two car train style pull out at once, but decided I didn’t need to show off my leet driving skills that much(okay so the truck has more to do with it than my skills). Plus I wouldn’d do that unless I knew the other drivers were good.

Hehe, oh well, being a good samaritan is fun sometimes.

Another Denver Doper (around Dry Creek and I-25). We got about 2 feet here. Our complex has a 6-foot swath that was snow-plowed. Unfortunately, all it did was pile the snow into 3-4 foot drifts behind the parked cars. The residential area around us hasn’t been plowed though, just a few paths broken by a few 4WDs. One of the up-sides to being unemployed was not having to go to work yesterday and today. (They would have made us try to come in where I used to work.) Also, I should be able to finish off my Christmas cookie obligations if my flour suppy holds out. (And with the blowing snow, I didn’t have to keep brushing the snow off of the satellite dish!)

I wrote about the storm and posted pictures on my blog today.

I’m in downtown Denver (14th and Ogden) - we had 21 inches (measured with a yardstick) in our front yard and at least 3 feet drifted against the fence in the backyard.

Luckily, the snow was so dry and powdery that shoveling wasn’t all that hard. In fact, it felt good to get out of the house and get some exercise. Also luckily, I work for the state and got sent home yesterday at 11:30 AM and didn’t have to go in today at all.

I just got home from work to find that they have just started to plow. 27 hours after the storm ended. At this point all they’re going to accomplish is to polish up the eight or ten inches of solid ice.

Streets weren’t too bad, considering. A nice washboard effect about half the time, but overall, not too bad. Crowded as hell, though; most of them are shy a lane.

More snow tonight, maybe.

I got out at about noon today for the first time in almost three days. What a nightmare! Cars are abandoned all over, so the plows can"t do a good job, gas stations are closed because they have run out of fuel (tankers can’t get out), the grocery stores are running out of the basics (if you don’t start thawing your frozen turkey by tomorrow morning you may be out of luck for Christmas dinner), and the five days left of shopping just became three.

Add to that that the stores haven’t been restocked and you have a nightmare scenaio unfolding.

On top of that, people are using up ther vacation time sitting at the airport, which is still not fully opened, and others are cancelling vacation plans both for those leaving Denver and coming in, and the city is about to go into crisis mode.

I tried to find a hotel or condo for a couple of nights up in the high country to take my kids skiing between Christmas and New Years, but they were all booked up by people taking the entire week. I’d guess that 50% of them aren’t going to be there for the start of their vacation, and a good number are going to cancel.

If the mayor weren’t as popular as he is, he’d likely get canned in the next election.
